This Japanese classic is short and simple, it reads a bit like Kawabata‘s Snow Country but with less nature and more culture and clothing descriptions. It is a love story and a story of obsession that really worked for me. Both main characters were flawed and believable, you don‘t necessarily like them or hate them. Our narrators inner voice seemed real to me. The more I think about it the more I enjoy it. Looking forward to more Tanizaki.

Billypar This is good to hear - I've never read Tanizaki but I have his Seven Japanese Tales on my shelf. 3y

A futile attempt at love - both mocking the traditional and bemoaning the modern in their contrary values - the pathetic devotion of a man to the whore he crafted himself. The epitome of East Meets West chronicled in one couple‘s doomed affair.

A very interesting read. Life goes on and doesn't seem to change much. This book was written in 1924!

#marchintoreading day 19: #setinthe1920s

At least I hope these all are! It was harder than I thought, finding some #diversereads set in the 1920s (some were written in the 1920s and hopefully set in that era 🤔).

The only one I've read is Quicksand. Tanizaki's The Makioka Sisters is one of my favourite books but I haven't read these two yet. Have you read any of these books?

BellaBookNook I'm interested in the Plum Bun because I have another book from the Black Women Writers Series called "Minnies's Sacrificr Sowing and Reaping Trials and Triump" that I have been meaning to read. I never heard of this writers series prior to buying my book. So it's cool to see yours. Let me know what you think when you read it. 7y
Mixedreader I've read Quicksand and love Nella Larsen. She packs a lot of character and introspection in short novels. 7y
JazzFeathers I've read The Blacker the Barry. An intersting era portrayal, though l found the story a bit lame. 7y

The destructive love story between a young woman of 15, and her husband of 30. Published in 1924, the descriptions by Tanizaki of the human body are just beautiful. From what I read, it's a classic of the Japanese literature... I really enjoyed the descriptions, the writing, but the two main characters are quite unlovable. I read it for the #192019challenge ;)

Marchpane Sounds fascinating. I have a Tanizaki book around here somewhere that I haven't read, thanks for the reminder! 7y
