“- What is it? - she said.
- What is what? - I asked.
- That, that noise.
- It is silence... “

If you don‘t mind immersing yourself in a world where the landscapes are as desolate and barren as the characters‘ distorted sense of reality, where the wind has claws and bites till you feel it boiling inside you, please check out this collection of short stories and this author. Set in rural Mexico, they expose a unique type of existential loneliness.

jveezer I need to read this. It‘s been on my shelf since I read and loved Pedro Paramo. And I have a new edition of Pedro to read as well. So many books... 6y
Faibka @jveezer PP is one of my all time favorite novels. This is such a great collection, I hope you get to read it soon. My favorite story was “Luvina” you never really know if the narrator actually exists or it is just the blowing of the wind making up a story, love it! And I agree so many good books my tbr is bursting as are my bookshelves! (edited) 6y
batsy With a fabulous blurb like this, who can resist! 6y

This collection is stylistically similar to #PedroParamo. The stories are all set in rural Mexico, an area isolated, hot, and hostile, during a time of unrest and violence (c. 1920s), and the characters are poor. The writing is beautiful and I concur this is a worthy member of the #1001 list. And yet, I had difficulty reading the stories. I‘ve long recognized I don‘t get on with short stories. They frequently feel...See Below

arubabookwoman Incomplete to me and I am often puzzled by them. These stories combine the details of the brutality of life with a certain mysticism, and Rulfo sometimes seems to have gone out of the way to be puzzling. Still, I recommend this, but I recommend his novel #PedroParamo more. 6y
arubabookwoman My edition was illustrated with lovely woodcuts like the illustration above. 6y
Suet624 I have trouble with short stories too. Just get into them and they‘re done! 😂 6y

My project for this year is to read my TBR stack by year of publication starting with 1950. So far I‘ve read (or reread) the following: The Moon and Bonfires, The Family Moskat, The Wall, The Abbe C, The Grass Is Singing, and Our Spoons Came From Woolworths. Of these, my favorite by far was The Family Moskat. I have one more 1950 book to read before moving on to 1951–The Burning Plain.

Louise Welcome to Litsy! Are you from Aruba? Curious about your Litsy handle! 🤓 6y
SqueakyChu Great photo on your first Litsy post! I never heard of any of those books you‘ve read. 6y
SqueakyChu I take that back. I have heard of The Wall (by John Hersey?), but I never read it. Good luck with your book challenge. 6y
arubabookwoman Thank you for the welcome Louise. Yes I was born and raised in Aruba. I lived there until I was 16. Now in Seattle, by way of London and New Orleans. 6y
arubabookwoman Hi Squeaky— of those books I think you would like The Family Moskat. It‘s a great multi-generational Family saga about a Jewish Family in Warsaw from the turn of the 20th century to WW II. It‘s been called the Jewish Buddenbrooks. The Wall is good too—the Warsaw Ghetto during WW II. And of course the picture would not have been possible without your excellent instructions. 6y

This 1001 list book by Mexican author Juan Rulfo evokes a hot, desolate landscape where the poor struggle. Soldiers, rebels, laborers--all appear, but the main character is the landscape.
