The Runaway Settlers | Elsie Locke
2 posts | 1 read
the year is 1859 and the Small family arrives in the Canterbury colony without a penny to their name. Mother and six children have a hard beginning to their new life - all the more since they are runaways from a cruel father and husband in Australia. But there are adventures ahead . . . this long-established and well-loved classic by renowned author Elsie Locke was first published in 1965.

Pickpick

It felt impossible to choose a book to read to my 10yo & 8yo boys after finishing the Harry Potter series, but going with something completely different worked well. A charming book about an Aussie family in NZ during the gold rushes of 1860s.

Finished reading the boys the Harry Potter series the other day and wasn't sure what to read to them next. Nothing seemed like it could follow it. Decided on this, a NZ classic. Something completely different. So far, mostly good (though racist, which means lots of extra conversations).
