Betsy Ross and the Making of America
Betsy Ross and the Making of America | Marla R. Miller
3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
A richly woven biography of the beloved patriot Betsy Ross, and an enthralling portrait of everyday life in Revolutionary War-era Philadelphia Betsy Ross and the Making of America is the first comprehensively researched and elegantly written biography of one of America's most captivating figures of the Revolutionary War. Drawing on new sources and bringing a fresh, keen eye to the fabled creation of "the first flag," Marla R. Miller thoroughly reconstructs the life behind the legend. This authoritative work provides a close look at the famous seamstress while shedding new light on the lives of the artisan families who peopled the young nation and crafted its tools, ships, and homes. Betsy Ross occupies a sacred place in the American consciousness, and Miller's winning narrative finally does her justice. This history of the ordinary craftspeople of the Revolutionary War and their most famous representative will be the definitive volume for years to come.

Not as much is known about Elizabeth (Betsy) Griscom Ross Ashburn Claypoole as compared to her contemporaries, but the author does her best to flesh out Betsy with the available evidence. Learned a lot about early Philadelphia (I live near there), the Quakers —Betsy left when she married her non-Quaker 1st hubby but later joined Free Quakers— and her family business. She worked almost all the way to her death at 84 years old as an upholsterer &👇

ValerieAndBooks and seamstress. Did she make the first “Betsy Ross” flag? Her descendants says she did. But she certainly did provide upholstery projects at Washington ‘s request. A lot of info packed in this book. 5y

Having just visited Philadelphia I could relate to locations I had seen throughout the city. This book is very thorough so it definitely expanded my knowledge about Betsy and her family.

How much is myth and how much is real? Let‘s find out! Reading this under shade when I‘m not in the pool. It‘s been a hot 🥵 month for sure!!

Suet624 What do you think of the book? (edited) 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Suet624 tbh I haven‘t gotten past a few pages 🙃. Only because my other current reads were more compelling! But I recently finished a couple books — so will definitely focus on this now. 5y
