Matchless: An Illumination of Hans Christian Andersen's Classic "The Little Match Girl" | Gregory Maguire
14 posts | 22 read | 19 to read
The beloved New York Times bestselling author of Wicked reimagines Andersen's "The Little Match Girl" for modern readers, putting a new twist on a timeless classic. In Matchless, Gregory Maguire adds a different dimension to the story, exquisitely intertwining the match girl's tale with that of Frederik, a young boy who builds a city out of trash, and whose yearnings are the catalyst for a better future for himself and his family. Maguire uses his storytelling magic to rekindle Andersen's original intentions, suggesting transcendence, the permanence of spirit, and the continuity that links the living and the dead.

I missed out on ALL the holiday book exchanges but that‘s okay! I found this little gem among the 1550+ books in my home 😊 This will be my Christmas Eve read.

The Little Match Girl is one of my favorites but I seem to have passed on my picture book copy 😔

Congratulations on your milestone @MatchlessMarie My sins are many: I‘m a librarian who buys more books than she borrows; I get frustrated when I have insomnia and buy books; and when I don‘t have insomnia I get frustrated I don‘t have enough time to read and console myself by buying books #1kgiveaway

MatchlessMarie @celtichik 😅 Not sure how I have lasted this long tbh but the fantastic library system in San Antonio helps 🙃 6y

Congratulations Amanda @MatchlessMarie #1kgiveaway

My TBR is now longer than my read stack. I‘m trying, I swear.
I also stopped buying books for a long time, just using the library or ILL, but lately I‘ve been buying some that I just can‘t get through the library.

MatchlessMarie I‘m usually a library hoarder too. But lately I‘ve been trying to just get physical books if I can‘t get them through OverDrive. I also utilize the suggest a purchase tool through my library for the ones they don‘t have yet that I neeeeeed. 👌 6y

Maguire originally wrote this retelling of The Little Match Girl for NPR. The endpapers and illustrations are quite lovely and it‘s a very quick read. A perfect little holiday story. 🤶🏻🎅🏽

Reading a story about someone who has no matches (based on the title... 😂) in a car that's nearing frosty temps whilst waiting for my mother to get nerve damage caused by surgery (not the cold, bless, that would be too ironic) checked out. This feels like a terribly awful good idea.

#bookandbrew : Maguire and matcha tea-- I think I'll call this photo, The Little Matcha Girl. Isn't that the story about when her basket of teabags makes a huge puddle in the rain and with her tears she mixes a last cup of 🍵 matcha tea? No? Well if you like bad tea-flavored puns, check out #matchabooks (this is my third tasteless pun on my favorite cuppa).

So I want to read but nothing I'm currently reading (?). I need a book I really don't need to "pay attention to". Some small, fun, easy. So I went with this. It's small, it's a retelling of a fairy tale.
