Jacqueline Woodson is the 2018-2019 National Ambassador for Young Peoples Literature In this moving picture book from multi-award winning author Jacqueline Woodson, a young girl and her grandmother prepare for a very special day--the one day a month they get to visit the girl's father in prison. "Only on visiting day is there chicken frying in the kitchen at 6 a.m, and Grandma in her Sunday dress, humming soft and low." As the little girl and her grandmother get ready, her father, who adores her, is getting ready, too, and readers get to join the community of families who make the trip together, as well as the triumphant reunion between father and child, all told in Woodson's trademark lyrical style, and beautifully illusrtrated by James Ransome.

Visiting Day is based on true events from the author‘s childhood. This picture book tells the story of family love- the unconditional love the child has for her father who is imprisoned; the strength and love of the grandmother to her grandchild she‘s taking care of, and to her son in prison. Delicate subject matter told beautifully, with great accompanying illustrations.

Jacqueline Woodson doesn‘t shy away from tough topics. She and James Ransome draw on life experiences to tell a story that needs to be shared. A much needed addition to children‘s literature.

“And in the early evening, if it‘s a little chilly outside, we can sit out back bundled up in blankets and make each other laugh as we make big plans for when Daddy comes home again.”

This is a great book to show children that not everybody‘s lives are the same. Some people have to go through different hardships. This is also a good book to show that no matter what is happening, your family is still your family and you should always love them no matter what.

This is a sad, but also very realistic story for many children. I loved the storyline of this book and the pictures do a great job with helping to tell the story.
