Mrs. Martin's Incomparable Adventure
Mrs. Martin's Incomparable Adventure | Courtney Milan
11 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
Mrs. Bertrice Martina widow, some seventy-three years younghas kept her youthful-ish appearance with the most powerful of home remedies: daily doses of spite, regular baths in man-tears, and refusing to give so much as a single damn about her Terrible Nephew. Then proper, correct Miss Violetta Beauchamps, a sprightly young thing of nine and sixty, crashes into her life. The Terrible Nephew is living in her rooming house, and Violetta wants him gone. Mrs. Martin isnt about to start giving damns, not even for someone as intriguing as Miss Violetta. But she hatches another planto make her nephew sorry, to make Miss Violetta smile, and to have the finest adventure of all time. If she makes Terrible Men angry and wins the hand of a lovely lady in the process? Those are just added bonuses. Authors Note: Sometimes I write villains who are subtle and nuanced. This is not one of those times. The Terrible Nephew is terrible, and terrible things happen to him because he deserves them. Sometime villains really are bad and wrong, and sometimes, we want them to suffer a lot of consequences.

Loved the heroines and the rousing court-case ending, but the whole of the plot was uncomfortably nerve-wracking for me. A pick, but unlikely for me to reread.

This book is a goddamn treasure. Two women find love late in life while tearing down a truly awful man. The sweetness of their romance, paired with the rage-filled revenge on that dude is just perfection.🔥📚💕

From the afterword. ”Happiness is not just an act of optimism — it is an act of defiance.” 💪🏽❤️

Funny and sweet and full of historical accuracy about how unmarried women were regarded in the time in which this was set. I‘m a little uneasy about the prostitute storyline. 4⭐️.

This is vintage Milan, y‘all: utterly charming with lots of funny bits, but also About Something. In this case, she delves into older women‘s challenges and limitations as they navigate a patriarchal, ageist world. Bertrice and Violetta have a wonderful time (and fall in looove) as they exact revenge on the Terrible Nephew, but they‘re also aware the social deck is stacked in his favour and everything could backfire on them. Things get tense. 😭

Forever delighted with writers who thank their dogs in the acknowledgments.

I ate my second take on curried tuna while I started Courtney Milan‘s latest. The book is super charming so far. The tuna was better with green curry paste than with yellow curry powder, but I don‘t think it‘ll end up in my recipe book.

I‘ve got a bunch of Google Play credit from doing surveys and I‘m always paranoid it‘s about to expire, so I went ahead and spent $4 on some short Courtney Milan. I‘m super excited for Mrs Martin!
