The Bauhaus school of design was founded 100 year ago in 1919 (I did the maths), and this book is an introduction to the people, products and politics, the art and the architecture that characterised the Bauhaus, summarised in 100 short essays, each subject illustrated. Founded and developed upon socialist ideals, the Bauhaus inevitably ran foul of the Nazis and closed before WWII, by which time its influence had spread across the world. 👇🏼

So, no mention of the band Bauhaus, yet, against expectation, a mention of David Bowie! How pleasingly ubiquitous he is. Also mentioned are New Order, and the striking video they produced for the song "True Faith". As soon as I saw the costumes for the Bauhaus school's "Triadic Ballet" productions, I groked the influence on the costumes used in the video ?

I'd love a Wassily chair, but at over £2000 for a newly manufactured model, I don't think I'll be getting one!

Not sure about the impractical balaclava, though.

Bookwomble @GingerAntics The chair was designed in 1926, and is still in production today, apparently being much sought-after. It's said to be comfortable, and the steel mask is optional 😁 5y

"In 1937, Nazi officials travelled to around 100 German museums and confiscated 20,000 works. The 'Entartete Kunst' [Degenerate Art] exhibition included more than 650 of the seized works that were deemed to be an insult to 'German feeling'."

This included the works of several Bauhaus artists. It's always comforting to know that a movement you're interested in was #bannedbythenazis
It feels like it adds that extra air of legitimacy.

While I'm a fan of the seminal goth band, Bauhaus, the book is about the design movement, which I bought on a (rather expensive) whim.

The book with the white cover is "Consider the Lilies" by Iain Crichton Smith, a novel about the impact of the Scottish Highland Clearances. A less expensive whim ?

Bookwomble The book with the blue cover is a volume of the letters of Thomas Gray, whose poems I recently read, and whose pen pal, Horace Walpole's, book of letters I'm currently (slowly and spasmodically) reading. It'll be nice to get at least part of the other side of the correspondence! 😊✉

Bookwomble @LeahBergen It's a shortish book at 144 pages, so I'll try to fit it in soonish (everything's a bit "ishy" with me at the moment!) and let you know ? The edition I have is the 50th anniversary one, hardback with pale blue metallic embossing on the cover. It looks nice, if nothing else.

Bookwomble @TrishB Me, too. Not entirely (though it's a factor) because they covered Ziggy and appeared in DB's movie, The Hunger. I'm the least goth-looking person you'd care to meet, but I got most of their original releases on vinyl as they came out. 5y
