You Must Be Layla
You Must Be Layla | Yassmin Abdel-Magied
4 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
Layla's mind goes a million miles a minute, so does her mouth - unfortunately her better judgement can take a while catch up! Although she believes she was justified for doing what she did, a suspension certainly isn't the way she would have wished to begin her time at her fancy new high school. Despite the setback, Layla's determined to show everyone that she does deserve her scholarship and sets her sights on winning a big invention competition. But where to begin? Looking outside and in, Layla will need to come to terms with who she is and who she wants to be if she has any chance of succeeding.Jam-packed with heart, humour and thought-provoking social commentary, You Must Be Layla reveals a powerful new voice in children?s writing and explores themes that are relevant to all teens, as well as those specific to the migrant experience.

Pickpick

Highly recommend this especially if you have 12-14 year olds in your life. It is sweet and funny and badass without shirking the hard realities faced by Muslims in Australia.
If you‘re a Muslim please be warned there are depictions of Islamophobia that may be especially distressing in the wake of the terrorist attack last week.

Yasmin Abdul-Mageid is an outspoken Australian Muslim, who has moved to England. She says plenty of sensible, common sense things, but of course, that doesn‘t stop bullies from knocking her down. This is her first foray into middle teen fiction. Layla is feisty and clever. #currentlyreading #marchrso2019 #preview #boundarc #notfinalcover
