Chinua Achebe's and Bobby Byrd's poems brought up feelings that Käthe Kollwitz's pietá had evoked when I saw it in my early 20s and was not a mother yet. Already back then it moved me deeply but I could not fully understand the bond between parent and child and how that separation devastates or destroys you.

Anna40 She made this sculpture for her late son. According to her diary entries, the mother is shown as reflective rather than grieving but I don't know, to me there is a lot of pain despite the intimacy. 5y
Izai.Amorim Is this the same one that Helmut Kohl chose to display at the memorial for the unknown soldier in Berlin Unter den Linden? It‘s very powerful indeed. (edited) 5y
Anna40 @Izai.Amorim good question but I think so! Wasn't he criticized because it represented 'only the 'German' victims? 5y
Izai.Amorim @Anna40 if I remember correctly, he was criticized because it wasn‘t his decision to make. He was chancellor, not king. He vetoed the winning design for the Reichtstag, too. Foster had to redesign everything. 5y
