When Sophie's Feelings Are Really, Really Hurt
When Sophie's Feelings Are Really, Really Hurt | Molly Bang
27 posts | 9 read
In a sequel to her bestselling When Sophie Gets Angry..., Caldecott Honor Illustrator Molly Bang asks: What hurts your feelings, and what do you do about it? Everyone's feelings get hurt, and it's especially painful in childhood. In this story, Bang's popular character Sophie is hurt when the other children laugh at her and tell her she's wrong. Sophie's face gets hot, and tears begin to flow. Then she questions herself and the value of the choices she's made. At issue is Sophie's colorful, expressive painting of her favorite tree. Sophie loves it, but her picture is different from the paintings done by the other students. ""The sky isn't orange! Trees aren't blue! Your picture is wrong!"" they tell her. In addition to the book's subtle art lesson (imagine the skies of Vincent van Gogh, for example), readers have the opportunity to compare and contrast all the paintings done in Sophie's class. In the end, the students learn there are many different ways to interpret the world -- and each other. Here is a simple story that tackles the common issue of hurt feelings as it gently helps us to be more kind.

“Sophie looked very carefully and painted what she saw, and she used color to show her feelings.“

It's silly but I felt myself almost tearing up at this story! I feel like so many kids could relate to what Sophie is experiencing and feeling. I think that this book would be so great for any child but it could be especially helpful for children who need a little extra behavioral help.

This picture book is about a girl named Sophie, and her feelings get really hurt! Her classmates poke fun at her artwork and it hurts Sophie's feelings a lot. I think that this story does a great job with illustrations. The colors reflect how Sophie is feeling and I think that is great for children. They are learning what feelings are which and how to cope with those feelings and this book can really help with that.

This picture book would be great for ages 4-7. I think this shows diversity in the classroom and how we should take care of each other.

This would be a great story to read to kids because it shows them healthy ways to deal with anger other than hitting or throwing a fit. It‘s a great story that they would enjoy

Picturebook, 2015. Beautiful contrasted and warm-colored pictures that fill the entire pages. Sophie paints her favorite tree based on how it makes her feel and the kids make fun of her for not painting a real tree. She gets upset but then remember how the tree makes her feel and other kids draw trees based on their feelings too.

But when she paints the trunk gray, it looks dull and sad. It feels all wrong.

This would be a lot of fun for inspiration for a group of younger kids artwork. It would show them the true value of imagination. This books colors really convey the message it‘s sending.

Published in 2015 by The Blue Sky Press. This book has an captivating color scheme. It‘s use of mainly primary colors really brings all of the emotions to life. It also has a very good message about illustrating pictures as you feel & not necessarily as they look in real life. This has great potential for discovering imagination.

“Sophie feels good just walking toward her tree. Her breathing is deep and slow. She looks at the beech tree carefully.”

I really love this page because the pictures do a great job of showing Sophie‘s favorite place to go to. I think that this would be a great activity to do with children at the CDC after reading this book. You can ask them to go home, go to their favorite, most comforting place and then come in the next day and draw them for the class!

The illustrations in this book are very vibrant and take up the whole page. She makes the pictures larger than the words therefore, I focus more on the pictures and I think the children would too!

I love the design and colors in this book. I also love the storyline. It is about a young girl standing up for herself and taking pride in her work. It also shows how everyone sees the world in their own unique ways.

This picture book was written and illustrated by Molly Bang. It was published by The Blue Sky Press in 2015. The illustrations in this book are absolutely incredible. Molly uses bright colors that contrasts with one another to make images stand out. She outlined items in the book and used colors that people wouldn‘t normally use for certain objects. She shows her feelings through the different colors.
