I love when I start a book and just can't stop! That's definitely the case with this sweet and thoughtful YA novel about two new friends from very different worlds. Libby is the oldest of six in a Quiverfull family; Zo is a genderfluid Bowie fanatic who just moved next door. The two develop a tentative bond that grows realistically as they navigate very different life experiences, and a whole heap of tension between their families.

Genderfluid Zo & Libby, the daughter of conservative Christians, make for unlikely friends but find kindred spirits in each other. Two vastly different POV characters but somehow it worked. I appreciated the varied depictions of belief & identity & esp. that Libby's journey didn't end with thinking all religion is evil-- just that some can be warped by its followers. & from what I know of the Quiverfull movement, Watts clearly did her research.

This was a surprisingly delightful read. I liked Zo‘s explanation of her identity, and Libby‘s interest in the world outside of her family. I was pleased that this wasn‘t a book about Zo coming out or Libby having a crush. It‘s a friendship story, pure and simple.

Starting this over an oh-so-adult dinner of a bowl of cereal, a glass of milk, and a bowl of applesauce. Haven‘t done much reading this week, as I‘ve been trying to reorganize my library/craft room. I stacked all of my partner‘s boxes of cookbooks in the hall, because really? It‘s MY room. I‘ll post pictures when it‘s finished; I think it‘ll look great, and it‘s a pretty creative use of a really small space.
