This Scorched Earth: A Novel of the Civil War | William Gear
2 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
This Scorched Earth is an amazing tour de force depicting a family’s journey from devastation to rebirth following the American Civil War, from New York Times bestselling author William Gear. The American Civil War tore at the very roots of our nation and destroyed most of a generation. To truly understand the madness and despair of such a horrendous conflict one needs to pick a moment. Or see that war through one family’s eyes. In rural Arkansas, such was the Hancocks. Devastated by a cruel war, they faced down their personal hells and in spite of it all survived. Their survival is a testament to the power of love...and the American spirit. This is their story. And ours. A fantastic book. Simply the best price of historical fiction I have read in years. Great characters thrown into terrible situations, great pacing and just enough historical detail to make you feel you are there but not overwhelm. Felt like I lived the Civil War with the characters. It is however graphically violent and contains sexual violence. Highly recommend this one, it was a treat to read.

Epic. The tag line calls this a novel of the civil war, that doesn‘t do this novel justice. The story follows the Hancock family in northwest Arkansas as the war begins. The 2 older brothers and the father head off to war while mother, sister, and younger brother stay at home. By wars end the farm is gone and no one knows who‘s alive or dead or where they might be. The devastating effects of war and the belief in family drive this story.
