Oof. I know just how you feel, Henrietta.

LeahBergen 😆 I have her first book waiting on my shelves. 2y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen I enjoyed them both! If I remember right, Dennis originally wrote the pieces for a UK paper during the war as the Village edition of the Keep Calm and Carry On effort. (edited) 2y
LeahBergen Yes, I think that‘s correct. And they weren‘t collected into book form until the 1980s or so. 2y
Aimeesue Lucky us! I'm glad they were collected. (edited) 2y

Pickpick

The sequel to Henrietta's War is another collection of letters drawing wry and funny vignettes about people in an English village during World War II. It has a bit of a sadder, darker tone though, which is very resonant right now, as Henrietta and her friends struggle with guilt at having life relatively easy compared to others, while also finding the deprivations and upsets extremely wearying and depressing. (Me during lockdown, to a T.)

willaful One of the things I liked about the book is that though Henrietta's husband is in the mold of “communicates with grunts“ man typical of this sort of book, we do see them having real conversations and truly caring about each other. And his sturdy common sense is a good balance for Henrietta's tendency to agonize and despair. Otherwise, the author's own obvious chafing about being just “the doctor's wife“ would make the book too sad to still enjoy. 2y
