From the Heart of Africa: A Book of Wisdom
From the Heart of Africa: A Book of Wisdom | Eric Walters
3 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
A collection of African wisdom gorgeously illustrated by artists from Ghana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Canada, the United States and more. Aphorisms are universal. They give guidance, context and instruction for life's issues, and they help us understand each other and the world around us. We use them every day, yet never think about where they came from or why they exist. In this beautifully illustrated collection, Eric Walters brings us classic sayings from the places where this shared wisdom began. Ashanti, Sukuma, Akan and Kikuyu: all of these cultures use the portable and easily shared knowledge contained in aphorisms, and from these cultures and more this communal knowledge spread. This book is a celebration of art, of community and of our common history.

The kids enjoyed trying to interpret the aphorisms without reading the meanings supplied by the text. Vibrant art!

We were slightly disappointed none were from Ethiopia though.

Okay. I love the art here, and the little pieces of life advice are good. The book itself is gorgeous. However, some of the aphorisms are attributed to particular African people or countries, when, really, they are mostly just generalities like “Unity is strength”. Also the author is not African, which is fine, except that he says in his intro “We are all African” because Africa is where humanity started. It just didn‘t sit right.

RJHowe Beyond the scientific “We are all African” is a saying you hear around east Africa a fair bit. My wife and I were often treated with “welcome home” in that part of the world. I found it quite endearing. 5y
