Bringing Nature Home
Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants, Updated and Expanded | Douglas W. Tallamy
4 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
“If you cut down the goldenrod, the wild black cherry, the milkweed and other natives, you eliminate the larvae, and starve the birds. This simple revelation about the food web—and it is an intricate web, not a chain—is the driving force in Bringing Nature Home.” —The New York Times As development and subsequent habitat destruction accelerate, there are increasing pressures on wildlife populations. But there is an important and simple step toward reversing this alarming trend: Everyone with access to a patch of earth can make a significant contribution toward sustaining biodiversity. There is an unbreakable link between native plant species and native wildlife—native insects cannot, or will not, eat alien plants. When native plants disappear, the insects disappear, impoverishing the food source for birds and other animals. In many parts of the world, habitat destruction has been so extensive that local wildlife is in crisis and may be headed toward extinction. Bringing Nature Home has sparked a national conversation about the link between healthy local ecosystems and human well-being, and the new paperback edition—with an expanded resource section and updated photos—will help broaden the movement. By acting on Douglas Tallamy's practical recommendations, everyone can make a difference.

I loved this book! I listened to the audio (hoopla) then went back to reread most of the physical book which is packed full of photos of insects, trees, and plants. Plus, there‘s charts and lists which are great references for those hoping to get started planting native plants to attract wildlife and increase the biodiversity of their lawns/lands. One of my top nonfiction reads for actionable advice on helping the environment.

My other purchase at the church book sale yesterday. I attended a webinar that the author did for the Florida Wildflower Federation last year, and was so impressed by him and his work. I‘m really looking forward to reading this.

Crazeedi Sounds like an interesting book. I've always loved identifying the wildflowers around the different places I've lived 3y
ValerieAndBooks Great find! He lives in the same county I do! Recently read his Nature‘s Best Hope, and recommended that my DAR chapter invite him as a future speaker 🤞. I‘m the conservation committee chair for my chapter. 3y
Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks The lecture he did for the Florida Wildflower Federation was so good! I hope you get a chance to hear him. He‘s a very engaging speaker. Nature‘s Best Hope is on my TBR. 3y

A few months ago, my local bookstore owner turned on the charm and talked me into this book. Now that the sun has finally showed up, I'm so glad to read it and start planning my garden. #currentlyreading #ifeelsomuchspring
