“Vivid and elliptical... If you've ever asked yourself what would have happened if Philip Marlowe had been Odysseus... here is a clue to the answer.” —New Worlds THE HUGO AWARD-WINNING FIRST NOVEL EVER WRITTEN BY THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE CHRONICLES OF AMBER! Conrad Nomikos has a long, rich personal history that he'd rather not talk about. And, as Arts Commissioner, he's been given a job he'd rather not do. Escorting an alien grandee on a guided tour of the shattered remains of Earth is not something he relishes-especially when it is apparent that this places him at the center of high-level intrigue that has some bearing on the future of Earth itself! "Roger Zelazny [was] the compleat New Wave author, so daring he could pen nothing without perturbing some creaky icon... so strong a writer, so moving in the sweep of his plots and imagery."—David Brin

Mehso-so

Quiet descended upon the crowd at the Sheraton-Cleveland as Asimov sliced open the envelop containing the name of the winning novel of the Hugo Award on a warm September day in ‘66. Big Frank sprayed a mouthful of red wine over the back of Ellison‘s neck as he heard his epic, Dune, would be SHARING the prestigious award with Zelazny‘s slim, dry, Earth-based, This Immortal. He stormed out & missed Rodders‘ premier showing of his new Star Trek pilot

Jari-chan This made me laugh 😅 6d

Bookwomble That made me laugh, too 😂 I do like Zelazny, though this isn't one of his I've read. 6d

The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble you‘re not missing much 6d
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja He can be a bit hit and miss. I do love the Amber series, and Jack of Shadows is great and could have stood at least a couple of sequels that we never got. 6d
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble the best thing about it is the humour. It‘s very deadpan which I liked. The story is meh. 6d

Hmm.. Not my favorite Zelazny. Not much of a plot, llthough parts of the story were very good. The mythology mainly.

Pickpick

They call him Kallikanzaros, Karaghiosis, and Konstantin. He calls himself Conrad. His wife is Cassandra and his dog is Bortan. The legends of ancient Greece have resurfaced in the radioactive ruins of earth, or perhaps they never left. The current owners of the planet are Vegans (their origin, not their diet). Conrad conducts one Vegan and a motley crew on a dangerous tour. He must decide whether to protect the Vegan or kill him.

Loved the Chronicles of Amber series and Zelazny‘s work with Robert Sheckley. Even though This Immortal shared the 1966 Hugo, it was his first effort and IMO doesn‘t stand up to his later work. Interesting, but dated #2019
