Daine reluctantly sails to Carthak as part of a peace treaty delegation from Tortall. She is to examine the Emperor Orzone's sickly birds. While healing the captive birds, Daine discovers a new and terrifying dimension of her wild magic: She can bring dead creatures back to life. What is she to do with such immense power? Finding out the answer nearly costs Daine her life, but slowly she uncovers the darkness that is coursing through Carthak and the evil that threatens the fate of the peace treaty. As the gods plan vengeance on Carthak for the terrible deeds the empire has committed, Daine must learn to wield her newfound power to thwart their divine retaliation and secure peace for all of Tortall.

My favourite of all of Daine‘s books (although the last is a close second) a truly fantastic book where we explore Tortal‘s southern neighbour for the first time and Daine looses her temper in just the most massive way posible (with a little help from a meddling old woman)

Daine travels to the Empire of Carthak as part of a risky peace delegation, heals the emperor-mage‘s beloved birds, befriends the crowned prince and a marmoset, meets some dinosaurs, and generally wreaks havoc as the means of vengeance of a foreign god. What else is new? Though I think Pierce‘s heart was in the right place & she was trying for diverse representation, this book is problematic in places in its depiction of a POC state with slavery.

I think this is my favorite Tortallian novel so far. I love Dane & her spunk, & in this story we see her show that she truly is not to be trifled with for those too stupid to have picked up on it before. That it is a girl with Wild Magic that puts the Carthaki emperor in his place is perfect. If you‘re looking for a world that really highlights strong females Tortall is the place to watch them show the boys true strength & power.

I really enjoyed this new chapter in the quartet, but it had quite a different feel to the previous books and there is a lot more politics and pomp and ceremony. There is still plenty of adventure for Daine and the dinosaurs episodes were unique! I feel there is still plenty more to come for Daine and the troupe and I‘m looking forward to the next in the series.

Good solid read. Nothing really jumped out at me as a standout positive though.

I like this book, it has a really good story and the character development is excellent, but I just don‘t like Daine as much I as like Alanna. She‘s a bit slow on the uptake and can be a bit spoiled. I am kind of bothered by the whole student/teacher love story, much more so now that I realize how much older her teacher is than her. I like that the author doesn‘t make her characters perfect, but I like her other characters more.

My review is basically just: ❤❤❤❤❤

Intense, well-paced, great growth for Daine. I've been blowing through this quartet so quickly I really haven't even reviewed the other two. They build on each other so well and I'll be diving into the finale ASAP.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag This quartet is my favourite! 7y

Couch bound for the moment but I don't mind. I never get to snuggle my sleeping baby anymore but she's recovering from a fever and wanted to nap on mommy. ❤

Littens, I can't stop with this Tamora Pierce reading! Finished Wolf Speaker late last night then began Emperor Mage on audio when cold-induced insomnia hit early this morning. Jury's out, though, on this full cast audio thing.

eekabook Oh man, Emperor's Mage gets SO intense! I'm glad you're liking this series so far! 😆 7y
MarriedtoMrT @eekabook I'm not surprised to hear that because Badger isn't happy and why oh why is Numair going to Carthak?!?! I fear for him! But I can't wait to see what happens. 7y

My favorite of the Tamora Pierce books that I've read, about a girl who can communicate with animals. This volume contains political intrigue and teasing hints about her teacher's backstory. I was at the National Book Fest in 2013 when Pierce said she was working on a series to explore that backstory. I'm tentatively looking forward to the first volume coming out in 2017! Date's been pushed back a bit, alas. #FunFridayPhoto
