The Anatomy of Evil
The Anatomy of Evil | Michael H. Stone
10 posts | 2 read | 34 to read
In this groundbreaking book, renowned psychiatrist Michael H. Stone explores the concept and reality of evil from a new perspective. In an in-depth discussion of the personality traits and behaviors that constitute evil across a wide spectrum, Dr. Stone takes a clarifying scientific approach to a topic that for centuries has been inadequately explained by religious doctrines. Basing his analysis on the detailed biographies of more than 600 violent criminals, Stone has created a 22-level hierarchy of evil behavior, which loosely reflects the structure of Dante's Inferno. He traces two salient personality traits that run the gamut from those who commit crimes of passion to perpetrators of sadistic torture and murder. One trait is narcissism, as exhibited in people who are so self-centered that they have little or no ability to care about their victims. The other is aggression, the use of power over another person to inflict humiliation, suffering, and death. What do psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience tell us about the minds of those whose actions could be described as evil? And what will that mean for the rest of us? Stone discusses how an increased understanding of the causes of evil will affect the justice system. He predicts a day when certain persons can safely be declared salvageable and restored to society and when early signs of violence in children may be corrected before potentially dangerous patterns become entrenched.

Did I bring in the boy's outdoor water table, lay a bunch of towels on the floor and alternately fill it full of homemade sand and bubble water so I can get some quiet reading time in today? Yes I did. Will I regret this decision later when it's time to clean up the massive mess I know he's making anyway? Probably. But he's having fun and I'm enjoying some "shhhh" time. Win win for now

This book has taken me quite a while to get through. It's not an easy read, for two reasons.

1. It's dry reading in a very academic style.
2. Some of the stories of the evil acts examined were just not pleasant to think about.

But overall, I'd give it 3.5 stars in it's attempt to categorize the acts and identify what triggers us to call something truly evil.

kuhkuhbird This book fascinated me. You're right. It's not always pleasant. It is interesting to me how we as humans try to explain away evil. 5y

Dry. I bought this for my Hallowed read and although it was scary to learn about all the psychopathological people listed it reads like a textbook.

Some light Saturday morning reading.

Cathythoughts Very light reading 😂😱 6y
AuthorMelindaSCollins Are you liking it so far? 6y
speljamr @AuthorMelindaSCollins It's a bit like text book reading, so I don't recommend reading it all in one take. Also, some of the described murders are not always easy to read; they can be gruesome. But overall it's a good read if you want to try and understand the gradations and thinking of such people. 6y

AuthorMelindaSCollins @speljamr Gotcha. Thank you. I love documentaries and books like this. Human psychology is utterly fascinating to me. 6y
Ddzmini I often wonder why we like to read about the darker human nature? That‘s why some psychologists have studied positive psychology instead to focus on some other than the dark or negative 6y
speljamr @Ddzmini Probably because people consider this a sort of forbidden territory. We don't want to confront the darker parts of our human nature. But I think it's important to study and understand both, while using such knowledge to be our best selves possible. 6y
Ddzmini True that‘s why I really enjoy psychology 😋 6y

Spent the afternoon reading while watching the Bills one and only playoff game. At least we finally made the playoffs.

benchley1 I read last night while the boyfriend watched the Falcons win! 6y
benchley1 I feel your pain though 6y
Melissa_J Poor Buffalo 😞 I don‘t watch the NFL anymore but was a major Bills fan in high school (during their four Super Bowl years). 6y
speljamr @Melissa_J I graduated in '89, so I remember those years well. 6y
Melissa_J To this day I can‘t listen to Aretha Franklin‘s Respect without changing the lyrics to the Bills version 🤣 6y

Liar, liar yes, my pants are on fire .Bought a new book .At least I had a coupon. I read books gently so another rationalization is I will give it as a gift!😀I just couldn‘t leave it in the store. While often murder is described as a moral failing , the author ,a psychiatrist, tries to figure out through psychology and neuroscience, the level of evil in an individual. He has compared over 600 violent criminals to come up with 22 levels of evil.

LauraJ If this book is as fascinating as it sounds, you deserve a pass. 6y
