History Matters: Teaching and Learning History in New Zealand Secondary Schools in the 21st Century | Mark Sheehan, Michael Harcourt
8 posts | 1 read
History Matters reflects the dynamic nature of teaching and learning history in New Zealand secondary classrooms. It demonstrates not only the wealth of enthusiasm and expertise within the history teaching community, but also a commitment by teachers to developing a research literature on historical thinking that is 'for teachers and by teachers'. The book bridges the gap between theory and practice among history teachers and contributes to the sorts of questions that teachers are currently addressing as they seek to improve our understanding of what it means to teach history in New Zealand in the second decade of the 21st century. Questions examined include: Why do we teach history? How do students learn to do history? What motivates history students? What does history have to offer adolescents in the 21st century? How can we incorporate an authentic M ori and Pasifika dimension into our history programmes?

No surprises really with the most popular- I think everyone else was doing a reread like I was before The Book of Dust was published- I‘m also not too surprised that my least popular book was this one- it‘s quite niche and NZ is a small place! It was an excellent read nonetheless

Redheadrambles Awesome I love these GR stats 6y

Pickpick

A solid collection of essays on a range of issues in teaching History in NZ secondary schools. There are some solid ideas and concepts discussed here, and the voices of teachers currently working in the classroom really contribute to the relevance and significance of what is discussed. At times it was evident that this was a little dated; having come through the curriculum realignment I can see the outcomes of some of the questions posed.
