One of the most original performance poets of her generation, Melissa Lozada-Oliva has captivated crowds across the country and online with her vivid narratives. Humorous and biting, personal and communal, self-deprecating and unapologetically self-loving, peluda (meaning "hairy" or "hairy beast") is the poet at her best. The book explores the relationship between femininity and body hair as well as the intersections of family, class, the immigrant experience, Latina identity, and much more, all through Lozada-Oliva's unique lens and striking voice. Peluda is a powerful testimony on body image and the triumph over taboo.

A beautiful collection! I picked it up because I love Lozada-Oliva's “The Women in my Family are Bitches“ poem, and was not disappointed with the other works included. Look out especially for her Wolf Girl Suite towards the end of the collection, and the biting “AKA What Would Jessica Jones Do“ towards the middle.

Some of the poems in this collection were incredibly good. Some of them I‘d want to reread. The reason I‘m giving it a so-so rating is largely because of the Wolf Girl Suite at the center of the book, which was, quite frankly, disturbing. Also, I didn‘t think that the violence in that section added anything to the book overall. I‘m not sure why it was added unless it was for shock value. Overall, 3/5 stars. #poetry

Rating: 4/5 stars.

Melissa is a talented poetess and a moving talent onstage. And cue, "the women in my family are bitches..."

I read this July 27-28 and gave it 3 ⭐️ on Good Reads. I kind of feel meh about this collection. Lozada-Olivia has a way with words but this short collection is rather repetitive. I think the mark of a good poet is someone who can make you think and empathize with them or the topic they are writing about. I have a feeling that this collection won‘t stay with me for very long, which is unfortunate as it should.

Revisiting books is underrated and can be easily overlooked with all the books that are constantly being pushed in our direction as readers. I try to make time to reread books because I love going back to my favorites. I like seeing what I underlined, the marginalia on the side of pages, the post it notes tucked in or sticking out, my favorite bookmark I‘ve been looking for lol

Make time to reread your favorites too 😄📚

WOW. Lozada-Olivia pulls at your heart like she plucks hairs. Quick. Painful. Beautifully.

An amazing book of poetry that focuses on beauty, immigrants (and being a minority), feminism, and so much more. Lizada-Oliva has a way of writing that reaches out and pulls you into her experiences as a Latina woman living in America. Sept 26th release.
