This past weekend was horrifying. School starts next week and Charlottesville is on my mind. Obama quoted, "people must learn to hate." Being intentional about what you READ to young people and how you speak about race is essential. Awesome article ??:

RaimeyGallant This is at the heart of a plot I'm developing. 7y
Kristy_K Thanks for posting! My friend and I were just talking about this and how she should talk to her children about race. 7y
enidkeaner My little brother, who's 9, hears about what's happened in Charlottesville and he sobbed because he realized there are people who don't like him simply because he's black. We've done our best to comfort him but he's still so hurt. 7y

BooksForEmpathy @enidkeaner This just tears at my heart. Hearing how he was affected by the hateful, violent, inexcusable actions and sentiments of white supremacists in Charlottesville and how our president responded goes to show how much WORDS matter. Thanks for sharing your story... it gives me more motivation to open conversations up with students and naming what happened. We have to be moral leaders for all the kids out there ❤️❤️❤️. 7y
BooksForEmpathy @RaimeyGallant Ooh! Curious to know more...?? 7y
BooksForEmpathy @Kristy_K Glad it validated how you and your friend were thinking of talking about race with her kids. It's more important than ever. Color blindness, while nice in a fantasy world, won't work here. Better to name people and teach empathy for all. To start small with just pointing out if a certain movie or book doesn't reflect what the real world actually looks like, etc. is a big step forward in changing the narrative. 7y
RaimeyGallant Top secret! Only three people know the reveals. :) 7y
Kristy_K @BooksForEmpathy Very well said. :) 7y
