Axe: The Master of Hestviken, Vol. 1
Axe: The Master of Hestviken, Vol. 1 | Sigrid Undset
3 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Set in thirteenth-century Norway, a land racked by political turmoil and bloody family vendettas, The Axeis the first volume in Sigrid Undset's epic tetralogy, The Master of Hestviken. In it we meet Olav Audunsson and Ingunn Steinfinnsdatter, who were betrothed as children and raised as brother and sister. Now, in the heedlessness of youth, they become lovers, unaware that their ardor will forge the first link in a chain of murder, exile, and disgrace. Soaringly romantic and psychologically nuanced, Undset's novel is also a meticulous re-creation of a world split between pagan codes of retribution and the rigors of Christian piety--a world where law is a fragile new invention and manslaughter is so common that it's punishable by fine."

This is the 3rd and smallest display: #Nordic authors. With a lot of patrons asking about authors from this region for some reason, I figured it's also dark a majority of the time and very cold outside, so this may pair well with the wintry season too. 😊 #LitsyLovesLibraries

Leftcoastzen I like all your collections ! 6y

faelinwolf Nordic noir is a prompt on the PopSugar Reading Challenge this year. Could that be why folks are asking for Nordic authors? 6y

Tonton Smilla's Sense of Snow was my introduction to Nordic Noir years ago...now about to start The Crow Girl... 6y
elliemcc11 Nordic Noir books(and films/ tv series) are massive in UK and Europe generally. Not sure the Pop Sugar challenge has anything to do with it though as the obsession has been going on a fair few years. 6y
elliemcc11 @Tonton read The crow Girl recently. Very good read if some rather unpleasant subject matter. Also read Miss Smilla a long time ago 😁 6y

Pickpick

A difficult and satisfying read. Though, sadly, underappreciated and little known. Many have heard of Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter, but few know about the Hestviken tetralogy. Which follows a youth of unassuming birth through a life of profound loss and love mirroring gently the tumult of the times in which he grew from an unremarkable boy to a tremendous if complicated man. I'm long overdue for a re-read...
