This read like a long feature article, and it was an awesome look at how big farms operate, why we grow what we grow, climate change, politics, family, and all sorts of other things all rolled up into one. Educational and super interesting!

I had to check out this book which has been rejected by our governor for his proclamation for One Book One Nebraska. He hasn‘t read it, of course, but doesn‘t approve of the anti-keystone pipeline and anti-Trump activities of the author. This book covers the history of farming in Nebraska, the industrialization and entry of corporations such as Monsanto and Dupont, and the legacy on farming and politics of the Great Depression. Quite good.

ohyeahthatgirl An official objecting to a book for dumb reasons like that is the fastest way to get it read. 5y

Nebklvr @ohyeahthatgirl That part brings me much joy and is evidenced by how hard I had to look to find a copy. Even Amazon was out. However, as a leader of a state with a mostly agricultural economy, it might have made sense to read it. 😳 5y

A significant book .This is not an organic farming book but insight into the “get big or quit “mentality of farming & how families try to hang on against agribusiness.Genoways comes from a farming background,shows how difficult it can be to adapt.Have a good year, buy some new equipment, next year, commodity prices could be down or weather conditions can lessen or destroy your crop. Seeds are patented so no saving & throw in climate change ...

jveezer Wendell Berry‘s books are a good insight into how farming changed over the last 100+ years. Also great writing and stories. 5y

Leftcoastzen @Liz_M The thing that really got me ramped up was Governor Ricketts wouldn‘t endorse it for One Book Nebraska dismissing the author as a political activist who has said negative things about government officials.We are supposed to be a democracy, the author voices genuine concerns about many things in regards to saving family farms. 5y

Suet624 I don‘t know how farmers manage. Vermont has so many farmers markets where locals can support family farms but one bad year can do any of the farms in. 5y

Wow another Republican ,who is a millionaire ,who doesn‘t believe that difference of opinion is one of the key elements, that supposedly,we fight for the freedom to express.I bet there are more people in Nebraska that can relate to a farmers experience rather than the experience of a son of the founder of TD Ameritrade. From Shelf Awareness,a site geared towards book retailers, but Littens also may enjoy w/insight especially toward indie stores.

Emilymdxn I always wonder how much lawmakers like these realise they sound like 1984 characters 😒 it‘s the same in the uk - our primary school history syllabus got changed the other year to have a ‘greater focus on the lives of great Britons‘ (not exact quote). It beggars belief, I‘ll definitely be reading the book tho I probably never would have done otherwise... 5y

Nebklvr I had to scrounge around for this book as it was sold out in surrounding towns and even on amazon! 5y

SaraBeagle @Nebklvr It was sold out for a bit in Omaha too. I am about 1/3 of the way through but set it down for a library hold that came in. Enjoying it so far 5y
