so-soPierre Lemaitre's standalone crime novel (translated from French by Frank Wynne) is a strangely unfulfilling affair that focuses on the nature and effects of guilt and internal rather than external consequences and while the first half is strong, I found the Antoine of the second half to be a slightly underdrawn and unsympathetic protagonist and his behaviour didn't ring true which ultimately made this just an okay read.
pickThe reason why Lemaitre is a master of noir is clear when you read his books. The three longest days in the life of 12yo Antoine are captured with such intensity that it is impossible not to feel the panic and confusion of a kid that, caught in a moment of madness, murdered by mistake one of his friends. An incident that will cast a shadow on Antoine life is told in barely 250 pages of superb psychological character development. Recommended !
