If you didn‘t enjoy Mrs Dalloway, then this is not the book for you. It‘s more readable, yes, and less intensely modernist, but at the end of the day, it‘s still a short book that takes a long time to read, about a bunch of privileged white people lolling about and preparing for a party. I love this book, but I‘m not sure it‘s for everyone. You might say that it‘s short on plot, but long on character development. Published in 1939 (UK), it is cutting indictment of the upper class, along with a psychological investigation into the public & private masks we wear in social situations. A group of narcissistic wealthy people are due to board a train for France, but are delayed owing to fog. ⬇️

gradcat (Cont) Green provides us with a fly-on-the-wall view of their subsequent stay in the railroad station hotel. There aren‘t many nice people in this book, but if you enjoy loads of terrific dialogue, often delivered with Schadenfreude, you‘ll enjoy this book. I think you will find that the novel is still relevant today. 5y
