My Body and I | Reni Crevel, Renc) Crevel, Rene Crevel, Ren Crevel, Rena(c) Crevel
4 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
In My Body and I (Mon Corps et Moi, 1925), Rene Crevel attempts to trace with words the geography of a being. Exploring the tension between body and spirit, Crevel s meditation is a vivid personal journey through illusion and disillusion, secret desire, memory, the possibility and impossibility of life, sensuality and sexuality, poetry, truth, and the wilderness of the imagination. The narrator s Romantic mind moves from evocative tales and sensations to frank confessions, making the reader a confidant to this great soul trapped in an awkward-fitting body. A Surrealist Proust."

"Between these two companions I could easily think of myself as a clock, a clock that was too sentimental to have any concept of time..."

Suet624 I'm so glad @saresmoore said that. I was befuddled. 7y
Hobbinol @Suet624 AND @saresmoore 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Surrealist writers and artists consider their work successful when befuddlement or confusion, or any other dissociative properties of a dream become the result of their work. (Take the corps exquis-- or exquisite corpse-- for example, wherein phrases or images become completely disjointed) You've both hit on my favorite subject to geek out on, so you'll have to excuse my enthusiasm! ❤️ 7y
saresmoore I'm totally serious when I say I want to take @Hobbinol 's Intro to Surrealism course! May I please have the syllabus in advance? Also, I was so impressed with your emoji face that I shared it with my husband. 🙂 7y

"The flower, a rose, is almost done wilting in the toothbrush glass.
Yesterday, at the same time, it was resplendent on my coat, the buttonhole high enough for it to surprise my face at the slightest tilt of my head."

vivastory I love Rene Crevel! 7y
DivineDiana A striking image! I imagine you wearing a rose on your jacket! 🌹 7y

Hobbinol @vivastory Say what?! You ARE a rare bird, aren't you? I should have known with your poetical past! 7y
Hobbinol @DivineDiana Thank you! Sometimes I do... but I prefer wildflowers really...😘 7y
Hobbinol @LeahBergen Kiss-kiss! Hug-hug, darling! 7y
vivastory @hobbinol I went through a period in my twenties where nearly all I read were Surrealists & other French writers from late 19th & early 20th century. 7y
Hobbinol @vivastory Gosh. Exact same here! And we survived 😉 7y
vivastory @hobbinol It was touch & go for awhile. I also went through a period where i was really fascinated by German Expressionist art. I had to not look at any of it after seven pm because I was having too many nightmares. 7y
Hobbinol @vivastory You and I have very similar literary DNA then. I too tore through the expressionists, and as with the surrealists, they had all their own poets and writers that I felt like I had to look into. From DADA to La Mama, I was on a decade's long journey into the twilight zone. (Just read this post of your's today😬) 7y
vivastory @hobbinol Have you ever been to the Chicago Art Institute? They have an awe inspiring surrealist art collection, including the largest collection in the world of Joseph Cornell's boxes. I'm planning on going to St Louis in October for a Stephen King reading. While there I will definitely be visiting their museum. They have a terrific collection of Expressionist works. 7y
Hobbinol Oh yes. I love their Cornell boxes! I'll be going through again next MArch. Don't forget about the new American Writers Museum down the street from the Art Institute if you have time. In the winter I love to grab some Russian dumplings at a restaurant across the street. I have my earliest memory of seeing a painting at the CAI. I love it there.😊😊😊l @vivastory (edited) 7y
vivastory @Hobbinol I visited Russian Tea Time Restaurant last time I was there. Will definitely be going back the next time I visit. The American Writers Museum is definitely on my list of places to visit. If you've never been i definitely recommend Myopic Books. Do you remember the painting you saw? 7y
