Most People: Are Good People | Michael Leannah
3 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Michael Leannah wroteMost Peopleas an antidote to the scary words and images kids hear and see every day. Jennifer Morris's emotive, diverting characters provide the perfect complement to Leannah's words, leading us through the crowded streets of an urban day in the company of two pairs of siblings (one of color). We see what they see: the hulking dude with tattoos and chains assisting an elderly lady onto the bus; the Goth teenager with piercings and purple Mohawk returning a lost wallet to its owner; and the myriad interactions of daily existence, most of them well intended. Most Peopleis a courageous, constructive response to the dystopian world of the news media.

Well-intentioned, but poorly executed. This is a diverse, hopeful book meant to reassure children that most people are good. A needed message, especially now. But it implies that people who swear are bad. It tells children that “a person who is frowning and mad, or sad, or mean is like a sour grape in a bunch of sweet grapes...Everyone looks nicer when they smile and laugh.” Ummmm...no. Just no.

Gezemice That‘s an awful message. A person who is sad is suffering... and we should all be more understanding of that. 6y
Blaire Oh no. Like girls haven‘t been told to “smile” enough. Grrr. 😡 6y
Susanita Oh hell no. 6y

This is a description about most people in the world. How most of us are good and friendly. I think it is a picture book to point out that yes, there is bad in the world, or sad people, or people doing bad things, but most people are not that way. I like the message in this book.
