This Very Short Introduction provides an analytical narrative of the main events and developments in Soviet Russia between 1917 and 1936. It examines the impact of the revolution on society as a wholeon different classes, ethnic groups, the army, men and women, youth. Its central concern is to understand how one structure of domination was replaced by another. The book registers the primacy of politics, but situates political developments firmly in the context of massive economic, social, and cultural change. Since the fall of Communism there has been much reflection on the significance of the Russian Revolution. The book rejects the currently influential, liberal interpretation of the revolution in favour of one that sees it as rooted in the contradictions of a backward society which sought modernization and enlightenment and ended in political tyranny. A concise but surprisingly comprehensive history of the 1917 Revolution. Smith covers 1917 itself- and it's political, economic, social and cultural consequences with rigour. My only criticism that it was light on causes, and often introduced concepts and groups that weren't explained or clearly identified until later in the text.

Redheadrambles @ClairesReads yeah I keep reading all these judgements on AtBItS and it sounds sort of okish - but then I head over to read GRs reviews and it sounds kinda average. I think it is a book I am happy to let go. Really interested in tomorrow's round and have decided I do need to read The Mothers even though initially it didn't seem like my thing. 8y

It certainly lit up the commentary on if he was Pro Choice or not and what to make of the Alt-right shout out - I don't know if I have seen a judgment so potentially inflammatory and yet weirdly not about the books. I was sure he was going to go the other way at one point .. 8y

Redheadrambles @ClairesReads I have been pretty happy with the last two rounds and I do think it will end up as UR vs HG. The judgements have been really solid. My only complaint is that certain characters in The Nix get a hard time when for me they were some of the best parts of that novel. 8y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles you predicted it! Do you have thoughts on the winner- I've only read UR but from what I've heard about HG I think it might wind up on top 8y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads hehe I am pretty happy with either outcome. I enjoyed HG more and rated it 5 but I think UR is trying to do something more ambitious and while it didn't always work when it did it was amazing. I would be happy for either book. It's been a fun year and I now have a list of books from this I want to tackle. 8y

Redheadrambles @Clairesreads hehe that's always my goal but somehow never quite happens. I usually cherry pick and then find a few new ones for the TBR list. For me this year that's - Version Control, High Dive and The Mothers. Trying to see if any of them fit categories for Read Harder 😀 8y
