30-Second Philosophies: The 50 Most Thought-provoking Philosophies, Each Explained in Half a Minute | Julian Baggini, Stephen Law
1 post | 4 read | 1 to read
A full-colour illustrated tour through philosophys most famous and most mind-bending ideas I Think Therefore I Am, Existentialism, Dialectical Materialism? The Socratic Method and Deconstruction? Sure, you know what they all mean. That is, youve certainly heard of them. But do you know enough about them to join a dinner party debate or dazzle the bar with your knowledge? 30-SECOND PHILOSOPHIES takes a revolutionary approach to getting a grip on the 50 most significant schools of philosophy. The book challenges leading thinkers to quit fretting about the meaning of meaning for a while and explain the most complex philosophical ideas using nothing more than two pages, 300 words, and a metaphorical image. Here, in one unique volume, you have the chance to pick the potted brains of our leading philosophers and understand complex concepts such as Kants Categorical Imperative without ending up in a darkened room with an ice pack on your head.

Mehso-so

Continuing on my quest to gently wade into some general readings on philosophy before going for the hard-hitting texts at some point (hopefully within the decade ?). The premise for this is that key philosophical concepts are explained in bite-sized nuggets in 30 seconds, but this was way too vague & the style of writing was aggravating. The "metaphorical image" accompanying each concept have captions that are basically just extreme Dad Jokes.

GingerAntics Ugh. Would you like to join the Dead Philosophers Society?! 2y
Graywacke Maybe check out the Oxford Press Very Short Introduction series… ?? 2y
batsy @GingerAntics Thanks for the invite! Do you have a reading list already worked out or do you guys pick books as you go along? I'm in way too many reading groups on Litsy 😅 but I'd love to join in if I'm able to for a particular month. 2y

batsy @Graywacke Yes, I think that series of books is much better based on experience with some other titles. Will look for the philosophy title 🙂 2y
GingerAntics @batsy we actually go by the length of the books, not by month. We had the next two books picked, but we didn‘t like Tao of Pooh so much we‘re passing on Te of Piglet. We‘re going to decide on our next book this week or next. Originally, the next book after Pooh and Piglet was 2y
Hamlet @batsy You might check out “Sophie‘s World” by Josten Gaarder. It‘s playful novel that gives a great introduction to many, many philosophers. 2y
batsy @GingerAntics That one looks good! Dense but really interesting. 2y
batsy @Hamlet Yes! I really enjoyed it. The book that kicked off my philosophy obsession and had me taking as many phil courses as I could at uni 😁 2y
