Strange Alchemy
Strange Alchemy | Gwenda Bond
5 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Gwenda Bond's first book Blackwood has been reimagined and brought back to life with new vision. On Roanoke Island, the legend of the Lost Colony -- and the 114 colonists who vanished without a trace more than four hundred years ago -- still haunts the town. But that's just a story told for the tourists. When 114 people suddenly disappear from the island in present day, it seems history is repeating itself -- and an unlikely pair of seventeen-year-olds might be the only hope of bringing the missing back. Miranda Blackwood, a member of one of island's most infamous families, and Phillip Rawling, the sherrif's son, who has demons and secrets of his own, find themselves at the center of the mystery. As the unlikely pair works to uncover the secrets of the new Lost Colony, they must dodge everyone from the authorities to long-dead alchemists as they race against time to save their family and friends before they too are gone for good.

Mehso-so

Cool idea for a story, but not the best execution. Switching back and forth between two points of view didn't work for me because both were in 1st person and did not have distinct enough voices. Some things could have been written more clearly, and I'm pretty sure one character was called two different names (or I totally missed something). I love Gwenda Bond's Lois Lane series, but the rest of her books have been kind of meh for me.

Pickpick

Fascinating story line, a mixture of history and paranormal. Most of this book was a so-so for me until the ending , where it got a lot better! 114 colonists went missing on Roanoke Island centuries ago without a trace, but when 114 people go missing in present day, will they finally find out what happened to the missing colony?

What a weird book. It's obvious this is Bond's first book--even revised, there is an unpolished feel that her other books lack. That said, whoa. She takes the story of the Lost Colony and infuses it with sinister magic and deals with the devil. Two modern day teens learn they've inherited that legacy and have to fight to save Roanoke from a long-dead evil.

ARC from #netgalley. Out August 2017 from Capstone.

Kelly Is this a reissue of her first book then? New title and everything! 7y

silentrequiem @Kelly It is! Based on the lackluster reviews of the book the first time around, it went through serious editing and revisions. 7y
tjwill It is really interesting, that it is revised and re-released. I wonder how often that is done. 7y

Lazy Saturday evening at home. I only wish the gas to the fireplace was still on. It's chilly!
