This historical fiction by Gwendolyn Hooks comes with many others in the series by different authors. It goes through what life was like for young African American children during the civil rights movement. I like this book because it has vocabulary about the topic hilighted throughout the book as well as small boxes with facts about different objects or something the book talked about throughout the story. Very good pick for history instruction!

ReaganT Scholastic provides a civil rights game activity for grades 4-8. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/activities/teaching-content/civil-rights-mov... This book pairs well with UDL principle 3.2- Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. It also goes along with ESOL strategy 5- Teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. 3y
StephanyNunez I like that the book provides vocabulary support for the student's and the integration of Social Studies. 3y
Sdemps Diverse books teach tolerance to young children. This story would also be an additional resource for a Social Studies lesson on the Civil Rights Movement. 3y
DrSpalding Categorizing this as historical fiction is not quite right because we know this is factual information. Your scholastic civil rights game activity is awesome! Use good books in the content areas. 3y

Quick, concise, and accessible. This short book hits the highlights for young readers. And I learned about The Green Book. Even at 30-something I still have so much to learn about this world. I never thought about what travel would have been like and that this book was needed to, basically, stay alive while traveling.
