Women in Clothes
Women in Clothes | Sheila Heti, Heidi Julavits, Leanne Shapton
Women in Clothes is a book unlike any other. It is essentially a conversation among hundreds of women of all nationalitiesfamous, anonymous, religious, secular, married, single, young, oldon the subject of clothing, and how the garments we put on every day define and shape our lives. It began with a survey. The editors composed a list of more than fifty questions designed to prompt women to think more deeply about their personal style. Writers, activists, and artists including Cindy Sherman, Kim Gordon, Kalpona Akter, Sarah Nicole Prickett, Tavi Gevinson, Miranda July, Roxane Gay, Lena Dunham, and Molly Ringwald answered these questions with photographs, interviews, personal testimonies, and illustrations. Even our most basic clothing choices can give us confidence, show the connection between our appearance and our habits of mind, express our values and our politics, bond us with our friends, or function as armor or disguise. They are the tools we use to reinvent ourselves and to transform how others see us. Women in Clothes embraces the complexity of womens style decisions, revealing the sometimes funny, sometimes strange, always thoughtful impulses that influence our daily ritual of getting dressed.

Pickpick

Although over 500 pages, each work in this anthology is only a few pages long. This makes it easy to pick up and set down, which was good, since I have been busy with grad school and don‘t always have long periods of time to read for fun. The pieces are thoughtful and feature a diversity of perspectives (including WoC, older women, trans women). There were also several pieces on some of the ethical problems of fashion.

“This avid consciousness that forces me to see myself and be seen by myself in a constant, grinding feedback loop, which makes the future a monstrous presence elbowing disproportionately for itself, did not slacken after the breakup. In fact, it was the only thing that remained. Destinies rise and destinies fall.”

“I didn‘t have money to buy expensive clothes until I started going out with Bryan [Ferry], and he was very generous and took me shopping and gave me money to buy the things I wouldn‘t have been able to afford. Unfortunately what I wanted to wear at the time, in the ‘80s, was Comme Des Garçons, black things with holes, and Bryan would say, ‘Why are you wearing those widow‘s weeds?‘”

“We are not talking about comfort here, we are not advocating fleece. We must always be a little bit uncomfortable. We are, are we not, part of this world? We have to be alert here, we can‘t get too comfortable. As they say, if you are going to go anywhere, you mustn‘t get too comfortable.”

“(laughing) I keep having this line from a sixties women‘s magazine in my head, like, ‘And yet she still managed to find a husband, ladies!‘”

“(laughing) Yeah, my husband still married me, even though I never change my clothes. We met when I was reporting in Haiti and I was wearing a five-year-old American Apparel T-shirt, and it definitely had holes in it. But he thought I looked beautiful!”

“I see a beautiful woman who spent her life completely unaware of that fact, who was as uncomfortable with her height as she was with the rest of her body.” - Jeanie Kimber

Just spent about half an hour with this book. I want to give it another chance but I'm unimpressed with it so far. The intro consists of Skype transcripts and emails that don't seem to be edited. The transcripts provide little of interest to anyone beyond the people involved in the conversations. The formatting is truly strange. The clothing survey questions are presented as a solid block of text with no spaces, rendering them sadly unreadable.

This book is amazing. It's huge and I only read a little bit of it every day but it is fantastic. It makes me feel so energised and fills my mind with interesting thoughts. #clothes #fashion #style #nonfiction

#PhotoADayNov16 Day 3 - #Inspiring

This collection of essays, illustrations, photo essays, and other writings explore what it means to be a woman in the world who has a relationship with fashion, beauty, and feminism. It's inspiring because it shows that you can be into feminism and fashion (or not), and it's ok.

The above photos are from a series where Zosia Mamet recreates cover poses from popular fashion, fitness, and lifestyle magazines.

merelybookish I find Sheila Heti's work interesting! Will check this out. 7y

charl08 Looks good. 7y
merelybookish I really liked her novel How Should A Person Be. And she did a series of interviews about Twitter for Believer magazine that I liked. There's something about her way of looking at things I find interesting. 7y

Since we're over halfway through 2016 (😦), I thought it a good time to look back over the books I've read so far. Out of the 73 I've finished, these 5 have had the greatest impact on me. I still think of them often, and I'm so glad they're a part of my reading life.

Reviewsbylola The Argonauts is on my TBR list. I will have to check out the others. 8y
