This book was intense.
I felt so entirely connected to Maddy that it scared me. Because she said/confronted what many can't.

"That was what rape had taught her, that was the truth she'd taken deep into herself: that without warning, without any possible way of knowing in advance, catastrophe could erupt out of complete ordinariness and be done directly to her. Anyone who thought otherwise simply didn't know yet, they hadn't been done like that."

I think my last read got me out of my slump.

This was a very powerful book. You feel the emotions Maddy goes through and it's almost as if you experience everything yourself. There's such a profound relief at the end, which I think the author wants you to feel. I recommend this great read.

Just a few chapters into this book and man is it powerful! This has a very uncomfortable subject but it's very well done.

I don't think lovely is the way to describe a book that deals with rape but this book was moving. It focuses solely on the girl and how she's handling it internally that it gives a perspective that I haven't really seen before.

Holy crap this book does not start off lightly. #firstlines

This book wastes no time jumping into the horrendous act forced upon Maddy, telling us in the first sentence that she's been raped. But instead of going into graphic detail about the physical aspects of the rape, Goobie focuses on Maddy's mental state. Every character has a distinct voice, making them feel like people you really know. Maddy's journey is difficult to read, and you're probably going to cry, but it's so worth it.

This is about a girl who's raped. It follows her in the aftermath of her attack, illustrating in an emotionally candid way the psychological effects that rape has on a person. We watch her struggle to cope & understand why this has happened to her as she participates in a class assignment where they kids write a story together about a tribal girl who eats the pains of others. It's an extraordinarily necessary book. 5/5. - TW: rape, self-harm.

In a society where the rape victim is dehumanised for being raped, where sympathy is conjured for the rapists, & justifications created to lessen the terrifying & brutal nature of the crime (i.e.: "she was asking for it" bullshit mentality), I'm sickened & pissed off that rape culture has brewed nothing but fear for victims to speak up & seek justice against the atrocities done to them. Speaking as a victim, I'm fucking pissed. - #amreading
