Chasing Embers
Chasing Embers | James Bennet
6 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
Behind every myth, there's a spark of truth... There's nothing special about Ben Garston. He's just a guy with an attitude in a beat-up leather jacket, drowning his sorrows in a downtown bar. Or so he'd have you believe. What Ben Garston can't let you know is that he was once known as Red Ben. That the world of myth and legend isn't just a fantasy, as we've been led to believe. And he certainly can't let you know the secret of what's hiding just beneath his skin... But not even Ben knows what kind of hell is about to break loose. A centuries-old rivalry has just resurfaced, and the delicate balance between his world and ours is about to be shattered. "A thrilling fusion of myth and modernity, Chasing Embers will have you rooting for dragons over humans and loving every minute of it." -- Kevin Hearne, New York Times bestselling author of Hounded

Mehso-so

Book 1 of 2019

Chasing Embers has an interesting premise supported by top notch world building. It did feel a little long in places and I felt that there could have been more time spent on relationship development between the characters. Overall it was a good read and I'm looking forward to reading more.

I'm all out of Rivers of London books and am looking for something similar. This came up in "Customers also bought..." so I've got a kindle sample to try, but had anyone read it? Or does anyone have suggestions to fill the Peter Grant-shaped hole in my reading life? #recommendations #readalikes #ifyoulikethattrythis

MariaW That certainly looks pretty good, haven't read it though. 7y

This has a fantastic premise, but at 72% done (according to my Kindle), I just can't be bothered to finish it. My reading time is short and I have SO MANY other books I want to read, and I can't be bothered to force my way through something that has so utterly lost my interest. I don't care about Ben, Rose, Atiya or what the resolution of the plot is going to be.

IReadThereforeIBlog Yeah. Pretty much my reaction but I stupidly stuck it out to the end. 7y
Caitriona I may have to get you to summarise the ending for me so I don't end up letting curiosity get the better of me! 7y

Panpan

James Bennett's urban fantasy novel (the first in a new series) draws heavily on English folklore and African myth to build a rich fantasy world but it can't make up for leaden writing, a main character who bumbles from trap to trap without any sense of agency and an underwritten love interest reduced to complaining and being used as bait.

The world we see and know is not reality in its entirety. There is another world, one that existed before ours, that spun alongside us, and one–having been relegated to hide in the shadows at the edges of our reality for the past 800 years–just itching to let loose and stretch its claws.

Meet Ben Garston. a nice, woe-begotten guy who is anything but ordinary. Ben, formerly Red Ben . . .

MrBook Great review! 😊👍🏻 8y
