Just Another Jihadi Jane
Just Another Jihadi Jane | Tabish Khair
5 posts | 3 read | 37 to read
?A novel about friendship, faith, and alienation, Just Another Jihadi Jane tells the tale of Islamist radicalization from the inside. Two children of Muslim immigrants in Englands industrial norththoughtful Jamilla and rebellious Ameenabecome best friends, and find in religion and social media a community as welcoming and encouraging as their public education is estranging. After Jamillas father dies and her brother marries, the two girls leave England and join the Islamist cause in Syria. The intellectual and emotional poverty as well as the violence they find there creates a story as gripping as it is heart-wrenching. As did All Quiet on the Western Front, Tabish Khairs novel reminds a new generation that heroism and sacrifice are not limited to one side in a conflict, and that the first victims of a murderous regime are those who live within it.

Really poignant quote that hits home a problem with religious extremism of any variety. This phrase says freedom is almost inherent in any religious ideology, otherwise it is no longer a matter of faith but one of oppression. Lots to chew on in this phrase.

Who has two thumbs and an overdue library book she checked out over winter vacation and needs to mail back bc she forgot to return it? 👍🏼👍🏼

Finishing it first though. 😬😂 Restarted this last night and it's moving quickly thankfully. It's an inner look at jihadist radicalization, really fascinating. Told from the perspective of a friend who believes she accidentally helped radicalize her friend who committed an attack. Chilling, really.

Notafraidofwords You can mail your books back 😳 7y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords I mean, I'm guessing I can, lol. 7y
802Librarian @Notafraidofwords Yes! Librarians don't care how it gets back to us as long as it does. We have a lot of seasonal residents who often mail stuff to us when they go back to their winter homes 👍😀 7y
Notafraidofwords @NHLibrarian that's amazing. I never ever heard that. That's really cool. Especially for residents that do not have easy accessibility. 7y

Settling in for the night after getting back from tiki drinks with friends! So psyched to have found this at the library earlier. It's a story about Islamic radicalization from the inside & I would love to learn more about this area. #diversebooks

tricours There's a new Norwegian book ("Two Sisters") on this very topic about two sisters, written by Åsne Seierstad. It wouldn't surprise me if it got translated, it's a real "it book" here. 7y
Dorianna I have that book waiting for me on my Kindle. I've been meaning to read up on the topic as well. 7y
BookishFeminist @tricours Oh that looks really good! I hope it does get translated. A few of her other books have been over here and I'd kind of be surprised if this one doesn't with the success of her others. Hope I don't have to wait long! 7y
BookishFeminist @Dorianna Its great so far. I'm really enjoying it. 7y
