From the author of the critically acclaimed "A Pigeon and a Boy," the extraordinary story of Zayde, his enigmatic mother Judith, and her three loversWhen Judith arrives in a small, rural village in Palestine in the early 1930s, three men compete for her attention: Globerman, the cunning, coarse cattle-dealer who loves women, money, and flesh; Jacob, owner of hundreds of canaries and host to the four meals which lend the book its narrative structure; and Moshe, a widowed farmer obsessed with his dead wife and his lost braid of hair which his mother cut off in childhood. During the four meals, which take place over several decades, Zayde slowly comes to understand why these three men consider him their son and why all three participate in raising him. A virtuoso performance of spellbinding storytelling, this is a deeply satisfying read--sensuous, hilarious, compassionate, and profound.

Mehso-so

The story set in #Palestine revolves around Judith and his son Zayde. She comes to the village after some tragic events and 3 man fall in love with her and all 3 consider Zayde as their son. The story has an interesting structure, colourful characters, sadness, humour, history ... but I didn‘t like it. Mainly because the voice of the main narrator seemed to me annoying, unconvincing and the overall prose overwritten (for my taste). ⭐️⭐️⭐️

BarbaraBB I read it so long ago I would have sworn it is set in Israel 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y

Simona @barbarabb That part was confusing me also! The author is from Israel, in the story are mentioned some cities, places in Israel, Hebrew words ... but on the back of the book in the summarisation is written “... Judith arrives in a small, rural village in Palestine ...”. My guess is that because story is placed in the time between first and second WW this village was in Palestine at that time. But unfortunately I‘m not interested enough ... 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB ... in the story to do some digging about that.🤗 3y
BarbaraBB Hahaha! Neither am I 🤣 3y
Librarybelle Good to stick with the story to complete it! 3y
