Private Island
Private Island: Why Britain Now Belongs to Someone Else | James Meek
3 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
In a little over a generation the bones and sinews of the British economy - rail, energy, water, postal services, municipal housing - have been sold to remote, unaccountable private owners. In a series of brilliant portraits James Meek shows how Britain's common wealth became private, and the impact it has had on us all. In a series of panoramic accounts, Meek explores the human stories behind the incremental privatization of the nation over the last three decades. As our national assets are being sold, the new buyers reap the rewards, and the ordinary consumer is left to pay the ever-rising bill.

Well-worth reading, and only the last chapter was out of date ('Farageland' - we've had 2 elections & Brexit since this was updated in Jan 15 - Meek's thoughts are still relevant but the UK has changed just a little!)

Mostly, though, Meek takes an example from each of the major industries that have been privatised in the UK, looks at how it happened, who benefitted, & whether there were alternatives. And it's shocking!

Be prepared to rant 😡

Reading about the privatisation of the UK energy industry. The proposals for Hinkley C were 'disturbing' in 2015, and they're just plain ridiculous today. So on we go.

Sometimes dry, ranty reading is just what's required on a Sunday morning.

TrishB I think just your first line says it all..... 7y
drokka Is the same power plant in Wales where women protested for months around the fence line? 7y
rockpools @TrishB 😂Not deliberate! Sadly the book covers 🚂🚰💡👩‍⚕️🏘... So yeah. 7y

rockpools @drokka Don't think so, but can't think where you mean, so there might be a story I've missed. Could it be Greenham Common, which was v famous (& long) women's protest against nuclear weapons in 1980s?. This is in Somerset, just across the Severn estuary from Wales, uses untested technology, and is likely to be hugely expensive. 7y
drokka Greenham Common is the one I was thinking of. I just could not recall the name. 7y
TrishB Sadly its all up for grabs (that which has not already been grabbed!) 7y

Continuing my nonfiction phase with a book about privatisation (I know!) - I really ought to get off Verso's mailing list - they keep pointing out things I need to read! Given we're in the world of politics and social economics (not sure if that's even a thing...), this is surprisingly readable so far. And I now know a shocking amount about the Dutch postal system!
