In the Land of Giants
In the Land of Giants: Journeys through Dark Age Britain | Max Adams
4 posts | 3 read | 8 to read
The five centuries between the end of Roman Britain (410) and the death of Alfred the Great (899) have left few voices save a handful of chroniclers, but Britain's "Dark Ages" can still be explored through their material remnants: buildings, books, metalwork, and, above all, landscapes. Adams explores Britain's lost early medieval past by walking its paths and exploring its imprint on valley, hill, and field. From York to Whitby, London to Sutton Hoo, and Falmouth to Mallaig, each of his journeys forms both free-standing chapter and organic element of a wider portrait of a Britain of fort and fyrd, crypt and crannog, church and causeway, holy well and memorial stone. Part travelogue, part expert reconstruction, In the Land of Giants offers a beautifully written insight into the lives of peasants, drengs, ceorls, thanes, monks, and kings during an enigmatic but richly exciting period of our island's history.

I've been doing this in my non-fiction reading this year. It's really opened my mind to so many new subjects, ideas and made me really think about what I'm reading. It's a new habit I'm going to nurture.
Looking forward to being part of your #thingsincommon challenge @Clwojick

History and archaeology meet hiking trips across the U.K. countryside in this lovely book. Adams posits that to really understand Dark Age history in the U.K. you have to traverse the landscape, and he does just that in this book. The narrative's a bit dry in places but Adams is a pretty good storyteller for the most part so it isn't that much of a concern :).

Perhaps I was not in the right mind frame for this at the present moment. The author is an archaeologist specializing in the dark ages of Britain traveling throughout Britain on foot, on bike or by boat, walking ancient paths, visiting ancient sites. Part history, part travelogue, I think I was looking for something more in style of a strict history.
