kgarzon UDL Principle 3.1 (Activate or supply background knowledge) can be shown by connecting the story to having pets, and UDL Principle 5.2 (Use multiple tools for construction and composition) is shown by using poetry as a new medium of expression.
EL Strategy 17 (Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, etc.) can be used by breaking down words on the whiteboard and marking the distinction of syllables.

DrSpalding This looks like a wonderful book for poetry specifically the poetic form of haiku. Read aloud, yes! And universal design principle 3.1 is perfect… Many children will be able to relate. 4y

This is a P picture book, which focuses on haiku. It has very pretty imagery and is the winner of the PA Young Reader‘s Choice and the SF Book Festival awards. It is a good book to use RA, SR, and CR. #ucflae3413f17

juliek1 UDL to use: 6.1 Guide appropriate goal-setting; student should be able to understand what a haiku is by the end of the lesson, and write their own.

ESOL strategies: 8. Use direct instruction: Modeling, explaining, scaffolding, name the strategy and show how to use it. Teacher should model, explain, and scaffold lesson on Haiku, before the student has to create their own.

This is a sweet & humorous story told in Haiku and the illustrations are terrific! I'm continually amazed at the talent out there.
