#ARC #NetGalley #MountARC

A prequel novella to Dawson's HMRC series.

It's an alternate historical fantasy based on the historical figures of Anne Boleyn and her ladies-in-waiting.

The story didn't grip me like the other books in the series. It wasn't just the usual depiction of promiscuous Anne or Anne the witch that didn't sit well with me, what pulled me out of the story most often were the anachronisms used ⬇️

2.5/5 stars

julesG ... the anachronisms used (right now only "sharing a bevy" and "smog" come to mind, but there were more).

All in all an interesting prequel, but it didn't add depth or important information to the existing/contemporary storyline.

#ARC #MountARC #NetGalley - meanwhile published

The mage of mages and a queen's guard decide, after years of a secret relationship, to run away together and open a tea/book shop in a small town. So far so Legends&Latte + Bookshops&Bonedust.

The novel finds its feet around 40%, when secondary characters have been introduced and a quest seems to come up.

There is potential for a series and I'm looking forward to it.

Low pick

Out already

Debut SF novel with a bit of romance. Unique cultural approach: Korea is the leading nation for space exploration.

Found family, enemies-to-lovers(?), cliffhanger ending.

Nothing much happens in the first 3/4 of the book, unfortunately. Secondary characters are mere plot devices and can only be distinguished by their quirks.

Not saying it's a pan, but it's definitely not a pick.

The Colorado Rockies, a billionaire with a vision to de-extinct the large animals from the pleistocene period and making them the attraction of his lodge and camping resort. What could possibly go wrong?

If you liked Jurassic Park, think of this as the low budget version where two gruesome murders lead to an investigation with ice-age creatures in the background.⬇️

julesG I had an inkling what went on before the second person was killed, which means in chapter one. I knew I was right before the chapters moved into the double digits. From then on it dragged and I wondered how no one even came up with the motive for the murders (which doesn't makes lot of sense anyways) until the evidence was right in front of them.⬇️ 1mo
julesG Should have listened to my instincts, if the author's name is printed larger than the title of the book, steer clear. 1mo

A small island. About 125 inhabitants. One is found dead. It could have been any inhabitant. Because everyone's memory of the night had been erased including the AI's who was the only one capable of doing so.
The murder collapsed the barrier keeping the island safe. If the villagers can't find the murderer and get the AI to raise the barrier again they'll all die. It's a race against time, they have less than two days.

TrishB I‘m thinking I‘m the only person who doesn‘t like this author 🤷‍♀️ also I have AI every second in work, feels like the only thing we‘re talking about. So I‘m reading medieval based books from now on 😁 2mo

julesG @TrishB It was a low pick. Not because of the AI, but it played a role. 2mo

Demoted to a small dark office in the basement of the bank in Baker Street, Harry now has to answer letters sent to Sherlock Holmes. She comes across a letter from her home village and decides to not only write back as assistant to Mr Holmes, but to investigate herself. Of course she finds the missing maid, but also much more.

A short cosy mystery. Perfect palate cleanser.

The Other Valley: A Novel | Scott Alexander Howard
post image
Mehso-so

Odile lives in an unnamed valley close to a lake. East of the valley is the exact same valley, just 20 years in the future. West of the lake is 20 years in the past. Citizens can petition to visit the valley to the East or West under special circumstances and after consideration and under strict security conditions by the Conceil.
Odile notices such visitors one day after school and identifies who they are, and by that... ⬇️

julesG ... that her friend from school will die.

Speculative Fiction about time's progress and whether we should or even can interfere with it.

What made me put this down over and over again was that there are no punctuation marks or indentations that indicate dialogue. I know this is a current trend, but it's annoying when you have to track back half a paragraph because you did not notice there was dialogue until the end of it.

TrishB That current trend needs to be over! 2mo
julesG @TrishB Yes, sooner rather than later. 2mo
Bookwomble @TrishB Seconded! (Actually, thirded!) 2mo
Lindy I just picked up my library hold but haven‘t started reading it yet. I checked just now to see the dialogue style in the Canadian edition and it‘s without dialogue marks. In general, I don‘t mind, although it depends on the author‘s skill. I find the absence tends to contribute to my immersion in the story rather than detracting from it. 2mo
julesG @Lindy It might be easier when you read the finished novel. The eARC had strange line breaks and that made the missing dialogue "landmarks" even more of a nuisance. 2mo
Lindy @julesG Yes, digital ARCs can be rough 2mo
