The flowing river never stops and yet the water never stays the same. Foam floats upon the pools, scattering, re-forming, never lingering long. So it is with man and all his dwelling places here on earth.

Kafka on the Shore | Haruki Murakami

According to Aristophanes in Plato's The Banquet, in the ancient world of legend there were three types of people.
People weren't simply male or female, but one of three types : male/male, male/female or female/female. ... But then God took a knife and cut everyone in half, right down the middle. After that the world was divided just into male and female, the upshot being, people spend their time running around trying to locate their missing half.

The Metamorphosis | Franz Kafka

“When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin. He was lying on his back as hard as armor plate, and when he lifted his head a little, he saw his vaulted brown belly, sectioned by arch-shaped ribs, to whose dome the cover, about to slide off completely, could barely cling.”

niluferplum Iconic—and chilling—first lines. Welcome to Litsy by the way!🙌🏻💓⭐️ (edited) 6y
ikuhoyama @niluferplum Thank you for letting me know this community. 🦋 The Metamorphosis is one of my favorites. It makes me think about “existence”. 6y
niluferplum Ah yes. I read it at school. You never forget the experience. It stays with you. 6y
