“The Glass Castle” is a tragic memoir written by Jeannette Walls. In her memoir she leads us through the emotional journey of her life that touches on harsh topics of family drama, poverty, and non-conformance— and she addresses the resulting trauma of those reoccurring themes in her life. Throughout her life she moves to numerous different places, all in which she learns a new life lesson, and we see her lose her innocence more and more each time

alyssajorgensen there‘s a change in environment. In each new place, she struggles through the life of poverty that her parents have chosen for her and her siblings, which results in them having an abnormal view of life. Her family does not listen to the conforms of society, but they rather play life by ear and listen to their own rules. (2) 1y
alyssajorgensen This causes them to be a little detached from reality, which is a struggle that Jeannette has to deal with throughout her entire life. We see her go from a naive young girl who idolizes her parents, especially her father, to a strong young woman who takes lead of her own life and turns her life around. When she is a teenager, she decides that she can no longer live her life in the illusion of the glass castle, (3) 1y

She makes the decision to move to New York City, where she eventually becomes a successful writer and completely turns her life around— however she still keeps her roots and family close to her. If you like books that talk about dealing with childhood trauma and having to find new ways to live your life that completely stray from (4) 1y

Jeannette Walls has decided to write this book in first person point of view, but she has an interesting take on it because at all points of the book she‘s focusing on her thoughts and feelings that she had at the time, instead of including any input of the knowledge and wisdom of her adult life. The Glass Castle: A Memoir | Jeannette Walls

“The Glass Castle” by Jeanette Walls is a tragic memoir that follows the life of her and her family. Through Jeanette‘s eyes, readers begin to see the amount of dysfunction that she has endured throughout her childhood, which will later translate into her adult life. The Walls family is far from a “traditional” family, and we can see this through the amount of times that they have moved, how they treat each other, and how they perceive the outside

alyssajorgensen world. As the story progresses, Jeannette allows the audience to see the major flaws that her parents suffer from— yet the flaws are also shone in a light that suggests her family embraces the flaws that they have, and try to live life by their own rules instead of the rules made by society. alyssajorgensen Recently, we have seen Jeannette‘s trauma involving alcohol, neglect, never having a stable home, and sexual abuse; which allows us to understand the way she tries to navigate her way through life. If you like books that arise feelings of disturbance, and face challenges of dysfunction in not only a family dynamic, but in every aspect of life itself, then this would be the book for you! (3) 2y
alyssajorgensen A crucial theme in this novel is the concept of childhood illusions. Growing up, Jeannette‘s father Rex comes up with fake blueprints and describes a glass castle that he will someday build. Jeannette always believed that this would actually come true, and fantasized about it constantly. (4) 2y
alyssajorgensen This is because her and her family have always grown up in a state of poverty, and this was Rex‘s way of protecting his children from seeing the reality behind their illusions. (5) 2y
