Confession time: I haven't been as active lately because I've been going through a pretty difficult mental health crisis. I've been experiencing depression and anxiety worse than I've ever dealt with before. Today is the first day in 6 weeks I've felt "okay." It's never been this bad for me. Has anyone else ever dealt w crippling depression and anxiety? What helped you through it? I need advice.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Have you talked to your doctor? If you are on any medication, it might need adjusted. 1w
KaraWines I have to set little tasks for myself and try, try, try to get out of the house every day, even when it feels impossible. It's such a slippery slope for me, and if I stay in, my depression and anxiety get so much worse. Even if I just drive around, it helps. 1w
cjk I went through a really rough patch years ago, and what worked for me was seeing a therapist, and taking medication. It helped me get to a point where I could actively work on my issues, and take better care of myself physically and emotionally. I hope you find what works for you soon! 1w
See All 38 Comments
laurenslibrary @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have and we're working on that. But I've been dealt a lot of blows lately that I'm struggling to deal with and I don't know if the medication will fix everything. I think I need to also learn how to make peace with things and just take a breath. Easier said than done for me though. 1w
laurenslibrary @KaraWines Staying in the house definitely makes it worse for me, too. The first few weeks after I lost my job were the worst. I would just lay on the couch all day. My husband started giving me little things to do to give me "daily goals." I do feel a bit better when I get out and talk to people, too. 1w
laurenslibrary @cjk Thanks! I'm doing both those things and I think I'm slowly improving. 1w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m not dealing with anything on your level, so I don‘t want to give pat advice... for me personally music is good, anything that will take me out of my own head space for awhile, whether it‘s singing to myself in the car sad moody songs, or peppy 80‘s one-hit wonders, it sometimes forces my brain out of its own internal whirling. Puts the focus on something else. Adult coloring works good for me too, some sense of accomplishment with actually.. 1w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ..leaving the house or being social. 1w
JamieArc What @KaraWines said. For me, it was baby steps. Putting shoes beside my bed so they were there to put on to get outside, even if just for a walk around the block. If you are driving somewhere, take a different route. Just that small thing can interrupt patterns in your brain to help get you out of a rut. Therapy being a given, I also read Man‘s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. 1w
RowReads1 I have on and off since my pre-teens. It has been pretty severe. Meds and therapy are what works for me too. If you want to talk one on one, let me know. 1w
OrangeMooseReads I‘m sorry you are dealing with this. I‘ve been there too. I agree with @KaraWines small tasks for me it can be as simple as got out of bed (even if I just get up and end up laying on the couch), brush my teeth, put on clean pajamas/comfy clothes. And try to get outside or away from the house. I‘ve found that Litsy can be a wonderful supportive community. 1w
DaveGreen7777 I‘m so sorry you‘re going through this! 😔 When depression and anxiety were taking over my life, I started going to a therapist. He really helped me see understand why I would feel the way I did, and it made it much easier for me to break the spell depression had on me going forward. Therapy did me a world of good! ❤️ 1w
Stacypatrice Medication helped me tremendously. I couldn‘t do anything until I was able to actually move. Until I could stop depression sleeping or moving like a snail in molasses. My best friend used to tell me to go outside and take a walk and I‘d want to punch her. Allow yourself to go thru it and once you find a bit of energy, take tackle one hour at a time. 1w
marleed I‘m so sorry. I‘m not able to provide you meaningful advice but I hope it helps to know I‘m thinking of you and sending positive thoughts to the universe. 1w
Mimi28 Therapy and meds and talking to friends and focusing on their problems and trying to help them got me out of my head and actually made me feel better that I was helping someone. I think everyone has depression and anxiety in some form. Also a gratitude journal helped me tremendously. I don‘t know if you are religious, but I love Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer. This is a great community. Thanks for reaching out. We are always here for you #litsyfamily 1w
BlameJennyJane I‘m so sorry you‘ve been struggling. 🤗 1w
JacqMac I‘m sorry it‘s been hard. For me getting outside really helps. I have to force it, but it always makes for a better day. I make myself a daily schedule, so I always have a routine to follow. Routines really help with my anxiety. I‘ve also started exercising everyday. When you don‘t feel up to it just tell yourself you‘ll only do 5 minutes. You can do anything for 5 minutes. Chances are after the 5 minutes you‘ll feel better enough to keep going. 1w
laurenslibrary @JamieArc Thanks, I will try that! And thanks for the book rec! 1w
laurenslibrary @RowReads1 This is the most severe it has ever been for me. I am using medication and going to therapy and I think I'm very slowly improving. 1w
laurenslibrary @OrangeMooseReads Litsy is so supportive! That's why I knew it would be a good place to ask for advice 😊 1w
laurenslibrary @DaveGreen7777 Thanks! I am in seeing a therapist about once a week right now. I wasn't sure it was doing any good, but I'm feeling better little by little so it must be doing something 1w
laurenslibrary @Stacypatrice My mom really pushes me too much right now, too. She doesn't understand that some days I can take a walk and some days I can't. I'm learning its okay to feel that way. 1w
laurenslibrary @marleed Thank you 🤗 1w
laurenslibrary @Mimi28 I've actually been finding myself pulled more and more towards religion as I go through this and was looking at Joyce Meyers books today. Right now Im reading 1w
laurenslibrary @JacqMac I'll have to try the 5 minute theory. The doctor told me I need to get some sort of exercise but it's so hard to get motivated right now. 1w
QuietlyLaura I‘m so sorry you‘re going through this. I‘ve also battled Anxiety and Depression most of my life to varying degrees. Earlier this year was the worst it had been in a long time. Medication, therapy, and doing any small, nice things for myself help me. Routine really helps. I even use a couple of apps for self-care. I hope you can find some relief. 💕 1w
Branwen I'm so sorry you're going through this, friend 💕 I have experienced crippling anxiety and really just self care and positive thoughts are what get me through the worst times. Also walking outside, if you can. Nature is a great healer. And books. Lits if books. 💕📚 Sending lots of love and positive thoughts your way 1w
CarolynM I'm sorry you're struggling. I don't have any advice but I'm sending good wishes your way. 💕 1w
laurenslibrary @QuietlyLaura My husband was telling me yesterday that I need to get into a routine, so I'm working on that. What apps do you use? 1w
laurenslibrary @Branwen It sucks that its getting cold now because I would really like to go for some walks! But I'll try to get outside, and I'm finally starting to feel up to reading again. 1w
laurenslibrary @CarolynM Thank you ❤ 1w
Ruthiella Hope you feel better soon!😍 1w
laurenslibrary @Ruthiella Thank you ❤ 1w
QuietlyLaura I use meditation apps, a mood tracker, a few helpful therapy type apps, a calorie counting app, and some simple games. I can do a post about it if you‘re interested. Some of the apps are Apple only. 1w
laurenslibrary @QuietlyLaura A post about them would be great! I don't have an iPhone, but I'm sure some of them are on Android. 1w
QuietlyLaura Ok! I‘ll get right on it and I‘ll tag you so you know when I‘ve posted it. ☺️💕 1w

laurenslibrary @JulietBooks Right? Idk if her lack of self awareness is supposed to be funny? I just find it annoying 1mo
pigeonsandcrows Hi! Definitely don't keep reading it if you expect to ever actually like the narrator. I've never been clear why the author chose to make her extremely wealthy as well as supposedly having the looks of a supermodel. The line you highlighted is pretty typical for the rest of the book in terms of tone and content. 1mo
See All 6 Comments
Redwritinghood I just don‘t like her books at all. I don‘t get her. 1mo
laurenslibrary @pigeonsandcrows I was hoping she'd have some sort of redemptive moment where she realized what a terrible person she is. Guess not? 1mo
pigeonsandcrows @laurenslibrary I don't know if it constitutes a spoiler to say, no, not really? I couldn't figure out why, for the purposes of the story, she needed to be and pretty much remain a terrible person. I kind of felt like I was being challenged to care by the author. Like she made her deliberately completely unsympathetic.

Part of me regrets reading this because I almost don't want to know how bad some of these low-quality generics are. As someone with a chronic medical condition that works in pharmacy, it disgusts me on multiple levels. These low quality drugs could be hurting me and my patients.
Overall a very well researched and well written account. A little bit of information overload in some spots, but worth a read for anyone that takes medicine (So everyone)

Life update: That new position at my old job? It was taking a huge toll on my mental health. So, long story short: I had to walk away. The good news? I had a new job within 3 days. Its 5 minutes from my house and I actually get to stand up and move around and talk to people. I think it will be a really good thing for me mentally to socialize a little more and psychically not to be tied to a desk all day. I'm pretty excited. 😁
