SantaThing Entry #44

Who Receives?

LibraryThing user James_Knupp

Secret Santa

LibraryThing user James_Knupp's Secret Santa was LibraryThing user katster!

Recipient's book tastes

Really into science fiction (working my way through all the Hugo and Nebula winners for best novel), especially space operas. I really enjoy sci fi that deals with geopolitics, lost colonies/worlds, ships, etc. "The Expanse" is my favorite series of all time. I'm also into non-fiction historical books. I like critical history books, especially biographies where the biographer does a good job of not praising a historical figure (Ex: Robert Caro's books on LBJ). I also love to cook and am very into NFL football (Packers fan).

Do not get

Any Young Adult oriented sci fi. Nothing again the genre, it just doesn't appeal to me personally.

LibraryThing user katemcangus: ordered (Dec 11, 2023, 3:09pm)
LibraryThing user jburlinson: By my calculation there is 8.02 remaining.

Cetaganda by Lois M Bujold. 9780671877446. $7.99 (Dec 5, 2023, 3:56am)
LibraryThing user Yells: My husband just discovered David Weber, particularly the Honor Harrington series. Per Amazon 'Honor--the heroine of this fast-paced, addictive space opera--is a polished, plucky bulldog of a naval officer, part Horatio Hornblower, part Miles Vorkosigan, part Captain Janeway, and with a razor-clawed telepathic cat thrown over her shoulder for good measure.' What's not to love? (Dec 4, 2023, 8:23pm)
LibraryThing user HuberK: The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell (Dec 4, 2023, 4:13pm)
LibraryThing user HuberK: B.L. Craig: AfterLife; AfterDeath; and AfterAll. (Dec 4, 2023, 4:11pm)
LibraryThing user LibraryPerilous: Some sci-fi:

Way Station (Simak) [galactic inn; conflicts w/ contact]

This Is How You Lose the Time War (el-Mohtar and Gladstone)

Generation Ship (Mammay) [generation ship, alien contact]

The Clockwork Rocket (Egan) [science-y, generation ship]

Beyond the Burn Line (McAuley)

Under Fortunate Stars (Hutchings)

Quietus (Palmgren)

Rick Perlstein might be a good Caro-like readalike

LibraryThing user MDGentleReader: I really enjoyed Half Share, a space opera with an emphasis on ships. (Dec 1, 2023, 8:52pm)
LibraryThing user fulner: Probability Broach by L. Neil Smith hits a lot of these https://www.powells.com/book/the-probability-broach-9780765301536 (Dec 1, 2023, 5:26pm)
LibraryThing user bigcurlyloz: Iain M Banks Culture novels? (The Player of Games or Use of Weapons perhaps) (Nov 29, 2023, 2:33pm)
LibraryThing user Nica6: Infinity Gate by M.R. Carey definitely deals with geopolitics and is riveting (and not YA)! (Nov 28, 2023, 9:16pm)
LibraryThing user KeithChaffee: Julie Phillips’s biography of James Tiptree Jr./Alice Sheldon might be good; Sheldon’s life was like a study in the changing roles of women in the 20th century, and Phillips doesn’t shy away from the controversies in her life. (Nov 28, 2023, 8:47pm)
LibraryThing user EerierIdyllMeme: - Ancillary Justice

- You might like the Vorkosigan Saga, although you might find it has too much YA aspect to it. (Nov 28, 2023, 7:07pm)
