I especially like fantasy, hard science fiction, physical sciences, and reference books, but I read on a lot of topics.
I don’t read horror or romance. I don’t mind romance in fantasy, science fiction, or other forms of fiction, but I don’t want it to be primarily romance. I also don’t want graphic sex scenes.
I listed my favorite genres previously, but I also enjoy some historical mysteries. For example, I have all the Brother Cadfael books. I enjoy fiction with protagonists who are mathematicians, librarians, and archaeologists. I like history, too, especially ancient history. I like humorous fantasy and science fiction, such as Terry Pratchett.
Richard Feynman is my favorite physicist. Pierre de Fermat and Marin Mersenne are my favorite mathematicians. Offhand, I can’t think of my favorite archaeologists, linguists, astronomers, and paleontologists.
I am working on refreshing my reading ability in French, German, Spanish, and Latin, so a book in one of my favorite genres at a level between, say, 4th and 8th grade would be okay if that was the original language.
