Bittersweet
Bittersweet: A Novel | Miranda Beverly-Whittemore
Suspenseful and cinematic, Bittersweet exposes the gothic underbelly ofan idyllic world of privilege and an outsiders hunger to belong. On scholarship at a prestigious East Coast college, ordinary Mabel Dagmar is surprised to befriend her roommate, thebeautiful, wild, blue-blooded Genevra Winslow.Ev invites Mabel to spend the summer at Bittersweet, her cottage on the Vermont estate where her family has been holding court for more than a century; its the kind of place where children twirl sparklers across the lawn during cocktail hour.Mabel falls in love with midnight skinny-dipping, the wet dog smell that lingers near the yachts, and themoneyed laughter that carries across the still lake while fireworks burst overhead. Before she knows it, she has everything shes ever wanted: friendship, a boyfriend, access to wealth, and, most of all, for the first time in her life, the sense that she belongs. But as Mabel becomes an insider, aterrible discovery leads to shocking violence and reveals what the Winslows may have done to keep their power intact - and what they might do to anyone who threatens them.Mabelmust choose: either expose the ugliness surrounding her and face expulsion from paradise, or keep the familys dark secrets and make Ev's world her own. From the Hardcover edition.

While well-written, the story drags. I stopped at about 30 percent because I felt like so little was happening. I also didn't connect with the main characters. I didn't care what happened to them and I just didn't find them interesting. Admittedly, I find wealthy people to be pretty boring in general. This novel was probably a lot more nuanced than this review, but I just couldn't stick around to find out. (Bail button not working. 🤔)

Sad to see a local used bookstore going out of business but I did get all of these for under $25 at their store closing sale!

I really enjoyed this book. It started a little slow, but by the end I couldn't put it down.

I rarely give up on a book but this book was impossible to get through. I hated the characters. I found it soooo boring. I regret buying it.

I really enjoyed this twisty, high Gothic family drama/mystery. Devoured it all in one late night!

The truth is neither good nor bad. It is above evil. Above morality. It doesn‘t offer anything besides itself.

'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' meets 'Special Topics in Calamity Physics.' Smart, juicy, and full of little twists.

Bought a copy of BITTERSWEET today, because my editor always gushes about it. (And obviously she has great taste.)

I've tried to read this book so many times... I just don't care about anyone in it.

It should be right up my alley but it's just boring and bad.

I'm so disappointed.

Soooo good. Just the right amount of dark and twisty, and Mabel is such a great narrator. Brilliant as a summer read.

Is it summer yet? This book is so twisty - I'm almost done with it and I still feel like I have no idea what's going on.
