Wilder Girls meets Outer Banks where a group of scuba diving friends stumbles across lost treasure, a legendary cave, and a new type of power... that comes at a price. The deeper you go, the darker you fall. Phoebe "Phibs" Ray is never more at home than when she's underwater. On a dive six months ago, she and her four closest friends discovered a handful of ancient gold coins, rocketing them into social media fame. Now, their final summer together after high school, they're taking one last trip to a distant Australian island to do what they love most - scuba dive. While diving a local reef, Phibs discovers a spectacular underwater sea cave, rumored to be a lost cave with a buried treasure. But when Phibs and her best friend Gabe surface from the cave, they notice that they're undergoing strange changes. Oozing gashes that don't heal. Haunting whispers in their heads... Something has latched onto them, lurking beneath their skin, transforming them from the inside out. When treasure hunters arrive, desperate to find the location of the cave and hold Phibs' group for ransom, she'll do anything to keep her friends safe. In the process she learns that, of all the dreadful creatures of the sea, she might be the most terrifying of them all.

I was so excited for this one, I am terrified of the ocean, so of course it is one of my favorite movie tropes. Running out of oxygen and being stuck in the ocean (47 meters down, the meg)... But this book did not live up to what I wanted in my head. The main character was insufferable. She was whining and annoying most of the time, and when she wasn't, she was fawning over Gabe for pages on end. I wanted more ocean story!! More explanation! 1/5

3.75⭐
•As evidenced by the many glowing reviews, this book has it all. I enjoyed it to be sure, but the atmosphere—which was supposedly its shining glory—was, for me, stilted. Unfortunately, this is a recurring theme with my books lately, so it's most likely a “me“ thing.
•Gail Shalan has been stepping up her narration game.

This YA book‘s exactly the kind of sharky story that I have been in the mood for! Part thriller, part fantasy— with adventure, treasure & romance, this is hard to put down! Five FL Key teens celebrate their high school graduation with a trip to a remote island off the Western Australian coast. But the discovery of a cave brings back the issues from their last treasure find— along with brand new complications! Unbelievable but ultimately fun!
