Into the Sun | Deni Ellis Bechard

When a car explodes in a crowded part of Kabul ten years after 9/11, a Japanese-American journalist is shocked to discover that the passengers were acquaintancesthree fellow ex-pats who had formed an unlikely love triangle. Alexandra was a human rights lawyer for imprisoned Afghan women. Justin was a born-again Christian who taught at a local school. Clay was an ex-soldier who worked as a private contractor. The car s driver, Idris, was one of Justin s most promising pupilsand he is missing. Drawn to the secrets of these strangers, and increasingly convinced the events that led to the fatal explosion weren t random, the journalist follows a trail that leads from Kabul to Louisiana, Maine, Quebec, and Dubai. In the process, the tortured narratives of these individuals become inseparable from the larger story of America s imperial misadventures. In this monumental novel, Deni Ellis Bechard draws an unsentimental portrait of those who flock to warzones, indelibly capturing these journalists, mercenaries, idealists, and aid workers. More importantly, Bechard vividly brings to life the city of Kabul itself, along with the people who live there: the hungry, determined, and resourceful locals who are just as willing as their occupiers to reinvent themselves to survive."

I am really having a hard time finding the appropriate rating for this book. Mostly because I feel like I wasn't in the right mindset to really enjoy it. Has that ever happened to you before? It took me a while to get into it & it had its really strong parts. The topic of expats in war zones utilizing the people & situation to benefit themselves was extremely interesting! I'll leave this one up to you Littens. (Pick or So-So)

ApoptyGina69 Oh gosh-potstickers are making me drool. I'll be ready for other cuisines after 2 weeks in delicious Mexico! 8y
LiteraryinLawrence I know what you mean about wanting to give a book "credit" for its merits but also wanting to be honest about your own enjoyment level of it, which can be totally affected by your mindset or mood at the time you read it. 8y

Hard to pick which one to start first after a colleague dropped off this bag of goodies today ... but I'm going with Into the Sun 🙌🏻
