Peter Stamm's best-selling debut novel, Agnes, now available for the first time in the United States. "Write a story about me," Agnes said to her lover, "so I know that you think of me." So he started to write the story of everything that had happened to them from the moment they met. At first, he works with Agnes to create a narrative that is most true to life, but as time passes and he grows more enamored with the narrative he has begun, he continues writing on his own, imagining a future for them after he reaches the present. Happy couples do not necessarily make for compelling reading, and as Agnes sees the unexpected plot he has planned for her, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur. In this unforgettable and haunting novel Stamm incisively examines the power of storytelling to influence thought and behavior, reaching a chilling conclusion.

Another slow burner where not alot seems to happen, but this time with a sinister edge always hanging out in the background.

What happens when reality and fiction begin to blur?

Short novel, less than 200 pages, and as I write this I don't think we ever find out the narrators name. You follow him and his lover, Agnes, as he writes their story. But what happens when he gets to their future in his story?

Lacythebookworm Sounds intriguing! 🙌 7y
EmilyChristine @Lacythebookworm It definitely didn't end how I thought it would. But then, I've just finished Woman in Cabin 10, so maybe I had expected more like that. But still it was an interesting ending. 7y

I like this quote. I've heard this said before and I think it's true. Not that I'm a writer but if you don't read anything how can you expect to write something for others to read?

DeborahSmall Totally agree👍🏼 7y

Almost done with Woman in Cabin 10! I picked up Agnes at work today. Short book by a Swiss author about fiction and reality blurring.

I appreciate what the book was trying to do, I think, but a cold and distant narrative voice about cold and distant people left me feeling hollowed out and tired, even if it came under 150 pages. Longer review forthcoming in an online mag.

Read this short novel in translation today. Although it has the feel of a first novel, this look at life imitating art is absorbing. A Swiss writer meets a Chicago grad student and writes her story. I'd give this a 3.5.
